OCZ XTC Memory Cooler

After deciding my RAM was most likely too hot, I decided to dive into the market looking for a RAM cooler. About 5minutes later I decided that the OCZ XTC fitted the bill nicely, and certainly looked the business!

So here it is, my first really bad review for OC3D! (Second if you count the one about Tom :D)

Forgive the poor photography, my tripod is elsewhere so I had to use the flash which washes the images out a bit.

OCZ XTC Memory Cooler

Firstly, here is what OCZ have to say about their product;

"OCZ Technology, an innovator in high performance memory, makes cooling and enhancing your memory easier than ever. Expanding on OCZ's proprietary XTC (Xtreme Thermal Convection) heatspreader technology, the new XTC Cooler air-cools your modules, improving memory performance, stability, and longevity to allow enthusiasts to tweak their memory more freely due to superior active cooling.

The XTC Cooler attaches to your motherboard's DIMM socket retention levers, making it compatible to use with all STANDARD SIZED DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 modules. While the fans cool your system memory, glowing LED fans illuminate your memory subsystem."

I arrived home Thursday, and according to my Dad, this managed to fit through our letterbox. I have no idea how since the packaging it was in is far too big to fit.

Nice packaging that tells you all the basics, and gives you a look at the product. No faults there, except annoyingly in the usual plastic clamshell. This will be annoying to get out.

Out of the packaging, it does look nice and shiney, no scratches from transit or any other damage from somehow fitting through my letterbox.

Not pictured is the contents. Along with the RAM cooler, you get 4 different mounts to fix on to your RAM modules, I assume one is if your memory modules are farther apart. You also get 2 normal screws, and 2 thumbs screws. This was a relief for me as 2 thumb screws would mean the RAM cooler would come into contact with my graphics card, and the thumb screws should make installation a doddle.

First up, what it is going to replace

PICT0962.jpg

Ghetto-tastic I think you will agree.

Fitting was a piece of cake, I simply screwed one of the 4 mounting places with a normal screw, the other losely in place with the thumb screw, popped it over the RAM and tightened the thumb screw! After a bit of snaking with the wire I hooked it up to my Zalman fan controller. Job done!

Next I tapped the power button, and all seemed to work well! Noise wise even at full speed you can't hear it over the other fans, so it is indeed "ultra quiet" or at least "not as noisy as Gav's Laing".

For a computer called "Red October" the colour is sadly fairly inconsistant, in time it will all be more red. Hopefully.

Anyway, I have no temperature probes, so my method for testing heat is a little crude.

Before when I touched the RAM, my fingers nearly got burnt. Now they don't. So yeah, it works!

Conclusion

If you are looking for a RAM cooler and don't mind blue LEDs, I recommend the OCZ XTC. It seems to do a good job at keeping my RAM that little bit cooler, hopefully giving me a slightly juicier overclock. It was extremely easy to fit, and is no noisier than the rest of my PC.

The Good:

Price - £11!

Looks - I like them personally, my RAM looked boring before, more exciting now.

Performance - Not as hot RAM can only be good.

The Mediocre:

Blue LEDs - For someone aiming for a red PC, this is a slight setback

The Bad:

Nothing to report

The WTF?:

How did that fit through my letterbox...?

I'm was considering buying this cooler too... Good review Gav my man... And seriously how the **** did it manage to get it through your letter box lol...

Lol @ "The WTF:" in your conclusion xD

nice review mate, especially considering you did this in 25 minutes :o I usually take double that to write one, including basic photo editing. Fact I'm not native english may help though ^^

One thing I miss is the layout of the review. It's pretty much one long story which is good to read if you read the review for the heck of it, but if you are looking for specific information, headers help. Doesn't have to be anything special, just a bold header "packaging" "installation" "appearance" "sound" etc.

Lol monkey wants to edit your review and claim it for himself :p Run Gav! Monkey you say your not native english speaker you have the best: Spelling, Grammer and even speed of writing on OC3D :p the Rest of us are all Yobs from the UK... :p

Hi! The LED is a nice addition, but I am inclined to ask. Honestly, does such a design with fans offer as a better alternative than your conventional alluminium headspreaders?

ppft no idea, my fingers don't get as burnt, and I like to throw alot of voltages around so things get hot. It also slightly mutes the EXTREMELY annoying Tracer LEDs

More scientific answer:

While aluminium is good at taking the heat away from the memory modules themself, the air will only slowly rise to the top of the case, by adding these fans I am able to blow that hot air away quicker, replacing with cool air, keeping the module temperatures within check. Since I only have low CFM fans above the memory they needed an extra kick, and the OCZ XTC provides this.

Being on water also means I can not rely on a CPU cooler to move the air around a bit more, since there is no fan close to the RAM/CPU. Yes ther are 92's at the back but I imagine most of the air they shift will be sucked out by the 120's in the roof, so this should help a little!

So basically, this is a good option if you run on water as you don't have enough fans for air movement, but kinda overkill if you run on air with sufficient air movement?

L.E.D. is really a selling point though, considering how the heat spreaders look ugly :P

Is it possible to swap the fans out?

What would of been a good idea if there was a little switch that swapped between different L.E.D colours.

Good review (Y)

The LEDs are not on the fans, which confused me. You have the 2 fans, then it seems there are 8 plastic "legs" sticking out of the memory cooler body, not the fans. So I doubt you can replace the LED colour, I wish I could get them red so badly! I will take photos later after food of what I mean, its hard to explain.

*Gangsta Voice* Daaaaaaaaaaamn bro! That's tight! :D

Thanks, saves me ripping mine out I guess! Can the LED's be disabled, you seem to have done that?

(Schweet case!)

You can. I burnt my ones and I'm buying replacement fans for them. Need to be 10mm thin fans though.

It depends. Touch your ram (after grounding) when you're stressing it or running prime95 and see if it's hot. My Ballistix ram's run hot enough to start heating the motherboard up but with the cooler on them it never gets a chance to.

You can just snip/break those LED ends off I think if you want to disable it.

If the ram is too hot to touch then get active cooling.

Or if your passing move than +.1 volt through them.

+0.1? ppft I throw as much as I can at them!! Possibly why I have reason to believe it was overheating :D thanks for the input moggle, I will look into either trying to change them or snip em off :o

+.1 is safe. Anything over that and then there is a risk.,

+0.1 = 1.9v right?

Well anyway if you got warranty or lifetime warranty (<3 u Crucial) then you got no worries if you run it within it's rated spec :)

Yeah Gav I've seen quite a few users change the fans to red/green coloured ones but I can't find any fans those size in those colours. I'm just getting the plain black ones. I suppose you could wire your own LED's to get the colour you want.
