OC3D Exclusive: OCZ prepares Neural Impulse Actuator for shipping next week

I can't see that....there are other Brain Interfaces due out later in the year...I just think that the press releases have been misleading...and then the follow up info has been non existing....at least our company doesn't take your money until we ship the products...I feel sorry for all the people who've actually paid for it and were expecting it on the original date of 28th April...with it being so late its making me wonder if they've hit a serious technical snag...and having to take a few steps back into development....it wouldn't hack me off so much if they just bloody told us what is going on...especially when they don't even tell there own staff...

*Hey, first post, I come form OCN, so OC3D seems to share a similar interest... and then the NIA too...*

I just did a little research.

1) on the ocz site, there is no mention of the NIA under perhipherals in the hyperlinks in the left column

2) the top bar (flash animated) I took products >> perhipherals > OCZ NIA

3) after reading the flash page-over marketing, I noticed a picture which was hyperlinked with some JS but had no anchor, so I zoomed in and saw "powered by brainfingers technology"

4) I googled that phrase

5) stumbled upon the BAT website, turns out the the "NIA" OCZ had at CES 2007 was actually a cyberlink brainfinger model with OCZ stitched in to it.

6) Looked around a bit, found out that the software is the same for both.

7) THE CYBERLINK SDK = NIA SDK

8) also found out a good deal about the device.

so....

It looks like the NIA is a cyberlink but the sensors are not as high quality (cheaper) and therefore have fewer discernable levels of input (cheaper) (cyberlink is very detailed, the ocz nia has only 7 levels of intensity it can read).

The good news is: I found the SDK, now someone go download it before OCZ has it taken off the internetz.

Also: The compant is brain actuated technologies. OCZ seems to have intentionally namedthe device the NI ACTUATOR as to throw all searches on google that include "brain" and "actuate" and "Technology" point to news articles abotu "OCZ's brain mouse"

pretty slick.

also:

ebuyer says that the NIA will ship on the 22nd, but in the cart is says "they have 24 due in 40 to 42 days." ouch.

play.com just says out of stock

extreme-pc.ca says shipping thursday the 22nd

Great bit of research there!

Also just so you know the date you see on ebuyer is generated by a script, which is +2 business days from the current date. So check again tomorrow and you'll see it will automatically change to 23rd. As for Extreme PC, it's still listed 20th for me, but I'm sure they'll change it because obviously it's incorrect. So the moral of the story is nobody knows the release date, not even most of OCZ's employees. For all we know, it has not even gone into mass production. And like Jaster said, they may have ran into technical problems and delayed it indefinitely. But nobody knows for sure since OCZ doesn't say anything about it. Any date you see listed anywhere from any retailers are simply educated guesses given to them by their distributors.

*snip

Nice work, this makes me even more suspicious.

This could mean that the videos we've seen have been a misrepresentation of the technology they are trying to sell us. ie all of the "previews" we've read might not be accurate (possible reason why no units have been sent to reviewers?).

How do we know the new cheaper sensors are as good as the stuff that was demo'd?

Don't get me wrong it could still be a great product, just that the lack of info from OCZ is really annoying.

the stuff demo'd at CES 2008 and CeBit 2008 are pure OCZ, the CES 2007 videos are all cyberlink.

OCZ is just like this. great engineers, and products so great they don't need marketing. This is why their marketing sucks.

OCZ has a lot in common with the New Orleans Police - they won't tell people what is going on (because they are too busy actually doing their jobs), they cancel things arbitrarily, and... they suuuuuuuuuuck when it comes to PR.

Also, the only date that seems interesting is the idea that ebuyer.com says 40 to 42 days before it arrives (if you add it to your cart)

Yes but you said

"The good news is: I found the SDK, now someone go download it before OCZ has it taken off the internetz. "

Where did you find it?

on the cyberlink site. You need to email them for a DL link.

The software pic on OCZ's own site says at the top of the window (which looks suspiciously like an HTML page instead of a program) "powered by brainfinger technologies" so... IDK, I just really want my NIA... or at least a press release (see above post for my beliefs on OCZ PR skill - about as 1337 as a 56k modem)

This flame is not directed at you so don't be offended but they're too busy to write a couple paragraphs explaining why it's late and confirming they're working on it? That's completely unacceptible

I know and feel that way. The only thing I can see with OCZ right now is 1) wanting to control press views, and 2) having a nonexistent marketing team.

OCZ has NO marketing. I asked a marketing question on their forum and was sent to the Sales Department. Sales doesn't do the marketing, they sell the products...

Brainfingers

Yes the OCZ model at both CES and CeBit was cyberlink-brainfingers, as this was where OCZ purchased the technology, this is not new news, however it was only a pre production model, check the you tube links and see how big the actual thing is, OCZ purchased this technology as they have the production capabilities and engineers that brainfingers do not have, as regards to the "cheapness", OCZ may have cut corners in terms of cost but doing this ensures its for the masses and not for the people who have $2000 burning a hole in there pocket, if you really want to talk about how many various input signals it can handle , then simple as go buy a wet cell EEG machine which can read all neural activity, thats if you have around 100K to spare and 2 hours to set up every time you want to play (trust me I'm epileptic and have been through this process many a time). The simple fact of the matter is that it may be only be able to read 7 input signals, at once I may add, but there are varying micro-electrical signals at various levels that can also be mapped, until we get a unit I think its highly ignorant to second guess how it will work based on a piece of technology that is 20 times more expensive and simply at the end of the day the hardware may not be the stongest point but its the software that will be the make or break this product. If the learning curve is to steep people will abandon it, if its a well structured curve then it could be the product of the century.

The answers will come in time.

And just to add still no new news on release dates, Chris at OCZ UK said that shipping is imminent, same ol response then, the marketing is a joke, and the larger companies in the trade haven't got a clue. However some are still saying "end of the month" which is rapidly approaching. I'll say it again though "I'm on there arses like a rapid pitbull", and AS soon as I know I'll let everyone on the forums Know"

And another point, Cyberlink site sucks, no wonder they never made any money, also look at the Copyright date at the bottom of the page, maybe OCZ got a bargain due to the company's quite obvious failings (we can make neural systems but we can't design a half decent website), just a thought.

OCZ UK Official Word

Right after nearly an hour on the phone to OCZ this morning, very nice chap he was too, he clearly stated the following.

1. Shipping of the first batch is Imminent, however there are only going to be 250 units shipped worldwide. UK will see 50 of them.

2. The problem has come from overzealous shops promoting the product way before they should of. Orders should not have been taken, other then Cebit until 28/04/2008. (Which coincidentally was the first official date spouted by some websites)

3. The next batch should be despatched within 3 weeks of the first batch and all backorders within the UK are expected to be completed within a time scale of 6 weeks, maximum.

And then we discussed the new DIY laptops, anyways thats whats been said this morning, when I discussed the term "imminent" he said he was expecting them within a week and 6 weeks till mass filtration.

I'll believe it when I see it.
