OC3D Community Game Servers

I like the idea of having a minecraft server

As i said a few posts back im happy for any OC3D guys to come play on my classic server, ive got atleast one SMP server coming along in the new year, hopefuly if all works out we should be able 2 to run a fairly standard SMP server (Mobs on, no give commands ect) and a SMP freebuild (no mobs, access to give commands ect) along side a player cap increase on the classic server.

If anyone wants ill post up the SMP ip/port once its up and running.

LOL 4 gig ram when empty? im assuming your on about SMP as theres no way classic would use anyware near that when empty. somethings up with your box if mc is running up 4gb usage when empty, ive had it runnin on my main tower (one in my sig) while ive been sorting out what mods and wrapper to run in the new year with 3-4 people in while playing myself and it was hovering around 3gb ram usage total over the entire machine on any of the wrappers on a pretty big world aswell(just under 200mb).

Just started it up and its currently sat at 400mb used using the simpleserver wrapper with no players,

:edit: thinking about it the linux SMP software does use a bit more ram than the windows one but its not that much of a difference to throw it up to 4gb.

Ill try it again when i get back to the office, It was the preAlpha virsion so i don't know if it has been updated since i last tried it.

Odd a friend of mine has ran a SMP server since about a month after its release on a machine with a fairly basic dualy and 3gb ram (just a small one so the kids could play with there friends ect) and when empty its never been above 4-500mb from what ive seen. Could be worth trying it again if its something your interested in running.

If people want to buy one off me ill host it but i put my old clients in front of them so if it eats ram.. It's a no.

Any way you play the game for about 100 hours then you get board of it...

well i know the windows versions of the hosting software are the most stable, it might be better to run it in an XP vmware if you do decide to as then you can limit the ram usage to X GB

minecraft is a bit odd, you can get mabey 15 players on a 2gb ram dedi or like 100 on a 4gb dedi, yet other hosts give 100 on 8gb dedi but 40 players on 4gb dedi, varys from host to host tbh.

Getting a PII x6 with 8 gig in the new year, file server/media machine + classic and alpha running in the background

100 hours, thats more than what I get out of most retail 39.99 games for the xbox and ps3.

I've still not got bored of it, one of my top games of all time

It's addictive I will give you that, But after time it wares off... I dos't have that much in the game to keep you clinging... No treat for pushing buttons.

Minecraft server could be cool. Most servers I go onto are VERY laggy because people have opened up so much map.

The only thing annoying about minecraft servers and lag really is if more of the map is open, but also forest fires, some one came onto my server and started a fired that stretched as far as we could see in all directions, so we had to start a new world because the backup of the world went missing

. ive not had any issues with lag other than that, but now i have restricted lighters n such so fires cant get started, and made sure you have to be a VIP rank to build and stuff to prevent griefing.

its only a 10 slot server, but i welcome anyone from OC3D on there, once ive got an up to date version of the admin mod i use (24th december)
