NZXT Phantom Renderfarm

I wouldn't use something as toyish on a setup costing what that will.

The reccs ATM are a pair of Megahalems as the NH doesn't fit.

You need to bear in mind that the H70 uses two fans and makes the same ammount of noise yet is nowhere near as hassle free as a pair of air coolers.

Look for the pre overclocked one.

£2432.24 (inc VAT)

That costs that much.

some guys on the EVGA forum use coolermaster v6s to cool theres not sure if they OC'ed it or not

Due to the early quirky bios (why does that sound familiar? oh yeah ! It's EVGA) you can't overclock them very hard any way. The fact is that the only reason this board is praised (even by Bit Tech who HATE EVGA) is because it is the only one like it on earth. Sadly.

i would get the ATCS version then

its a awsome case and the sr2 version will be good.

DH14 for cooling fella not sure if they fit on a sr2 but they are the best air coolers

Little devil makes awsome cases they are expensive bu they look awsome and will fit anythin you need in them

They don't sadly (well apparently but I wouldn't chance £120 on it).

It would be overkill anyways dude. They can't be overclocked very hard.. I can't remember why now but it's something to do with how it chains together.

yer its cool then

the megahalsm is the step down and if they fit its cool.

it would of been overkill but 24/7 rendering and getting some constant hot temps you would want them to be cooled as much as pos lol

Why doesn't it OC hard? I have seen guys running 4.9 GHZ+ on it without any hassles. All I need is 4.4 stable 24/7, not 6Ghz.

I don't really like big tower aircoolers. I think they are too big to give a clean build, somehow I am really taken aback by the charm of radiators

If I buy a system I do a simple calculation first to see if it is worth it's money.

I check up the Multicore CPU benchmark test on http://www.cbscores.com (or I check youtubes) and I see what score a system can do OC'ed to a 24/7 stable operation.

For the i7 970 this is 11.3 CBpoints.

I then build my system up to spec and see how much it costs in total.

I then divide the price by the renderpower, this gives me a price per CBP value.

This is really fun to do on some crappy HP/Dell or even Apple workstations.

For instance, an 27 inch iMac with core i7 processor will score 5.04 Cinebench points. This system with 16GB of ram will cost me 3.000 euros.

3.000 euros divided by 5 Renderpoints = 600 euro/CBP

Now a 950 system will do 7 CBP. Fully outfitted with nice PSU and 12GB of RAM this machine sets me back around 1400 euros.

1400 euros divided by 7 Renderpoints = 200 euro/CBP

Meaning a standard 950 system OC'ed to 3.8 Ghz is 3 times cheaper than an iMac.

Now do the same for a 970 system and you'll see it is actually the cheapest system:

1800 euros divided by 11 Renderpoints = 160 euro/CBP

This is how I figured out I should immediately stop buying macs and invest in 970's if I wanted renderpower.

Now if we do the same calculation for a SR-2 system we'll see it is actually good value:

3500 euros divided by 22 Renderpoints = 159 euro/CBP

This means that it doesn't matter for me if I spend it on 970 systems or a dual x5650 SR2 setup, both will give me the same value in Renderpower

What does it mean for the OC?

OK I did some digging.

The Xeon X5650 will go from 2.66ghz to 3.8ghz. Which IIRC is not anywhere near what this chip can do. That is apparently down to something in the bios.

However, the X5650 also has a maximum memory strap of 8X which means that the ram used in testing (and the ram sold with it) is limited to running at 1.52 ghz. Which when you consider that Mushkins can go to 2000mhz is a bit poncy.

As I said earlier there are quirks and niggles with this board. However as it has no competition then I guess you could put up with the crap bios if you really wanted one. Personally I would just build two seperate units using better Xeons.

I got bored reading all the comments so just looked at your rig pics for a bit longer. Very very nice..Im loving OC3d again..you guys have money..

Beautiful builds, I take it you like the NZXT Phantom quite a bit? ;P Juat curious though, why have you used the single sleeved cable extensions in the black build and not the White?

Also, great rendering skills you have. Those images are amazing.

WOW!

*nerdgasm*

both on the kit and the output.

I take it those are your renderings...

that Audi rear end is just sublime. love the metallic flecks in the paint and chromatic abberation coming off the 4 rings where it goes out of focus.

long story....

TL;DR version:

drunken thread on novatech forum led to a whole bunch (sic) of us renaming to fruits.

a few of us have kept the name to other forums...
