NVIDIA’s Show off GF100 at CES 2010

Nvidia has brought the GF100 Fermi-based desktop graphics card to CES 2010 and put it to good use running the DirectX 11-enabled Heaven benchmark from Unigine. Seen below installed in a Maingear system, the GF100 is about 10.5 inches long, takes up two PCI slots, has a cooling system with one fan, and requires extra power via two PCIe power connectors (one 6-pin and an 8-pin).

Nvidia's card has support for SLI (3-way SLI), DirectX 11, OpenCL, PhysX, CUDA, and should boast a 384-bit memory interface as well as 512 CUDA cores.

Nvidia noted that the cooler wasn’t final hardware, and clocks and other specs weren't ready to be announced yet

Is it only me or doesn't it sound stupid to go from gtx 200 series to gf 100. I think the should rename it to like gf 300 series :S

I swear I read somewhere that the Fermi cards were currently missing their performance predictions by up to 20%. Not sure whether to hold out for one or just get a gtx 200 series when I get round to my build. Spose there'll be plenty of reviews out for the Fermi cards by summer and hopefully the 200's will drop in price a little even if it turns out the Fermi's not all it's hyped up to be.

Oh the wonderfully mystical world of the marketing department! A bit of logic in the naming system would make sense but since when have nVidia been known for that, since they changed the names of some of the 9xxx series cards to GTX 2xx series without changing any of the chip, apparently to make it easier for consumers to know which GPU fits where in the range. Of course that same logic would apply now by calling the successor to the GTX 2xx series the GF100... Hmm...

GF100 is the in-house designation Geforce Fermi 100. Expect the retail part to follow the convoluted naming conventions that started with the G200's. GTX360 (performance), GTX380 (enthusiast), GTX395 (dual GPU), with the mainstream going under the GTS3xx moniker.

Ok I'll let them off partly then. I guess whatever they end up being called, will be interesting to see how they compare to ATIs latest.

Seems like the part that's being released first has a handy performance increase over the HD 5870. Who knows if it's what will end up in the retail channel though. My guess is if it's deemed only an incremental advance over the ATI product then you'll probably not hear a word from AMD. If it's big and unlikely to be matched by ATI's refresh or AIB's custom boards then I'd fully expect the AMD press office to start on the "nV's only following us/Northern Islands is the next best thing/we're being locked out of PhysX or unfairly penalised/Fermi's fan shroud is made from the crushed skulls of innocent children" spiel
