Nvidia Vs ATI (AMD)

Am building a new computer and i am stuck on what graphics card to get.

NVIDIA Vs. ATI (AMD)

i have a few cards im looking at,

- the lastest generation sapphire card - Radeon HD7950 @ 3GB

- the generation before the above - HD6950 @ 2GB

- mid to high range, Asus GeForce GTX580 @ 1536 MB

- high range EVGA GeForce GTX 570 @ 1536MB

Not sure what i should go for and why?

other information, i will be running intel i7 sandy bridge (or wait for ivy bridge). Which GPU would peer better with this CPU and with overall performance in game.

BTW, am looking to play BF3 on MAX settings but i want to be able to do it without stressing the PC.

i know that i have put lower memory on the geforce cards, i am happy to get a newer gen. i would just like some guidance on what to get with some reasons. il be using new PC for gaming.

need anymore information just ask plox

Now is the worst possible time to buy a graphics card as AMD has already released their 28nm products (at least the performance/high-end range we're talking about here), while we are still waiting for nvidia to release their counterparts. As a result, both AMDs new cards and(!) nvidias old cards are quite pricey.

I'd suggest to wait some weeks until nvidia has released their parts and the prices then will (hopefully) drop significant.

If you can't wait there is imho few points in getting an older generation card (at the current prices), so the 7950 should be the way to go.

I personally wouldn't wait as it could be a while before Nvidia release anything substantial. I would go for a 3GB 7950 as they are priced similarly to regular 580's and they are better.

Nvidia Vs ATI <--------- This is doing it wrong

Card A vs Card B

Take how much money you have to spend, find the cards you can afford in that price range and compare them, also take price to performance into consideration. Whichever one offers you the best bang for your buck wins.

But as said above, prices for new cards are stupid at the moment and you are better off waiting for Nvidia to release their cards and see how the prices settle. Once Nvidia release their new cards, there should be a price drop for their old cards, as well as AMD dropping the price of their older and newer cards.

I say should though because it's what should happen, but the way things are going with prices at the moment, I wouldn't count on it.

i had the same problem , i orginally choose a 590 gtx but my store messed up and i ended up having to wait ages for one and having to pay 800 euros for it ....

so i made the switch to ati radeon 7970 and it even came out cheaper

i really love the 7970 atmo so if u can spend it its definitly worth it

its a PCI 3.0 card tho but it runs lovely on pci 2.0

Depends on your budget. If you're looking for the fastest single GPU solution then it's going to have to be the 7970. If not then the 7950 will be just as good and IMO it's the better deal as you could overclock it to 7970 stock performance. At the moment Nvidia doesn't really exist in the market because they have not released their new GPU's so you'll have to compare to their last gen GPU's. However if you can get a gtx 580 quite a bit cheaper than say a 7950 then that's fine. Do you mind going Crossfire/SLI and can you wait?

if i was forced to spend my money on a g card today the 7950 is what i would be taking home.

its has the performance to warrant its cost unlike the 580 and 7970 which are both overpriced for what they do imo.

Not what you want to read on the day you drop £420 on a new graphics card

From what i have read though the first keplar release will be the 670ti which is supposed to come up on performance levels between the 580 and the 7970, we've got another 6 months to wait for 7970 beater to come out, so if the next nvidia release doesn't beat the 7970 on performance, then i dont see any reason why AMD would drop their prices.

Hi I just changed from my ASUS GTX 580 to the SAPPHIRE 7950 with a 120hz monitor. I can see a difference in that the 7950 was a good swap and TBH at this time you can still get a fair whack back for your old cards. If your gonna wait on Nvidia bringing out their cards you might see a price drop in the card you already have which means taking a fair hit on whatyou can sell it on for . Worked out costing me just over £75 for the change in cards and I think £75 well spent.

So overall you guys think i should go for the HD7950?If I do I'll be getting the sapphire version.

I want to be able to run BF3 on ultra settings with at least 40 fps. From my understanding this should do that with ease. Il be on a 27" 1920 x 1080 monitor. Just making sure I dont buy the wrong parts then fuck it up. lol
