Nvidia postpones Titan Z, was the R9 295X2 too powerful?

When Nvidia announced the Titan Z it met a mixed reception. While it was certainly the highest spec GPU announced to date but also the most expensive, the later being by a much higher margin.

Today it seems that Nvidia have delayed the Titan Z, with a new launch date yet to be revealed. Has Nvidia postponed the Titans launch to better compete with AMD's R9 290X2?

At $3000 the Titan Z is not cheap, costing well above what the Two Titan Blacks which form it. That being said it will certainly pack a punch with it's 5760 CUDA cores and 12GB (2x6GB) of vram, which should be more than enough for almost any gamers needs (Perhaps not 4K, that remains to be seen).

With AMD's 295X2 costing $1500 less than the Titan Z while being powered by two similarly performing GPUs and featuring a AIO watercooler, many believe that Nvidia Titan Z is simply offering no value.

Furthermore many speculate that the Titan was to be running a a lower clock speed than the Titan Black ( believed to be 730 MHz), which would actually offer less performance than AMD's vastly cheaper equivalent.

If current rumors are true Nvidia will need to go back to the drawing board, increasing the cards clock speed at the expense of thermal and power consumption and perhaps also consider a price decrease.

The price is the killer of this card.

The card may be aimed at gamers and those who want the compute power that it offers, but seriously $3K for it is a joke when as you say you can buy two Titan Black's for around $1K less and have better performance.

I do believe though that Nvidia probably did think that the AMD R9 295X2 wouldn't perform as good as it does and cost so little, when compared against the Titan Z.

Interesting, I was looking forward to seeing how it performed tomorrow though :\
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what changes they make and if it does indeed force a price drop.

There was also a rumour about Inno3D doing what Gigabyte did with the Titan Black and shipping the Titan Z with one of their coolers. Whether that is an indication that temps were a problem or that they were just offering an alternative cooling option I don't know.

NVidia need to get a full cover waterblock on there and forget about air cooling all together. Anyone who is serious about buying a Titan Z is going to want to use a custom waterloop anyway.

Well it's either AMDs 295 got them worried or the dumb ass $3000 price tag, it doesn't take a genius to work out which is the better card. Come on nVidia use your loaf.

The Titan Z isn't really competing with the 295x2, just like the Titan didn't compete with the 290x. It's certainly not AMD who are worrying them, it's probably the cooler.

It's obvius that these cards are up priced because they want it to be exclusive, but with the much lover priced AMD and maybe the "same" performance they cannot sell any of them. They have to rewise their card and also the marketing strategy of it. I hope it will be out in the market shortly. I would like to see the performance it has. :)

I would think Nvidia has gone back to do some bios flashes. If the Titan Z is any slower, even by a small fraction then it's worthless. Plus, if AMD can get two fully fledged 290x's on one card even though it's power hungry then there is no excuse why Nvidia can't.
3k for a card is pathetic. Anyone who wanted 2 Titans would just buy 2 Titan Blacks and be done with it. How on Earth does Nvidia think I would pay an extra 1k for no reward? If it was £100-250 more than Blacks in SLI then I could understand but would still hate it, but 1K is out of this world.
I love Nvidia, but I can't defend it with the price and rumoured performance of this card.
It needs a serious bump in speed and a much lower price.

Tripple slot seems like a good idea but the are still only using one fan to get rid of all that heat. It is either going to be be loud or temps are still going to be pretty high.
They should make a new cooler especially for it, for they price they are charging for the Titan Z they should at least have a cooler that will cool the card and be quiet.

Why they have the stupid restriction of not allowing partners to put their own coolers on these cards I will never know. Sure it adds little a bit extra to the card but i'm pretty sure the people with the money to buy a Titan Z in the first place aren't bothered about an extra £30 or so.

Nvidia are just cutting their nose of to spite their face, if they just let Gigabyte and others stick the Windforce x3 etc etc on the cards, they wouldn't be in this situation now and the cards would be a lot cooler and quieter than they could ever hope to achieve with stock cooler.

Not sure what the logic behind that is either, but Nvidia have a history of stuff like this so it's not too surprising.

Not too pushed about either, it's not as if I'll ever buy it anyway. ^_^

You mean I should cancel my pre-order of a dual "Z" system ??? ^_^

So you won the Lotto! I don't even know if that would be an upgrade from the Asus Matrix Platinum you have on pre-order. Can't wait to hear impressions of that card. I am starting to rethink my opinion on the Stryker also.

I would never get a dual GPU card, I've also never really been keen on dual GPU systems if I'm honest, I prefer my systems simple.

The striker is looking to be a good card, If you are upgrading from a much older GPU then it's looking to be a good purchase :)

What gets me is that if they knew it had heat issues why bloody release/announce it in the first place!?! They know 3rd parties are going to want to stick their own coolers on it's inevitable, seriously it's not like nVidia are new to this game. AMD cocked it up with the reference R9 290x I never thought nVidia would especially with a flagship model.

Probably just to say "Hey look what we have".

I wouldn't be surprised if they planned this from the start and then come out with "A New Improved Version" that has amazing cooling, Awesome clocks and is slightly cheaper and then after 2 months they bring out a "Boosted" version with exotic cooling and higher clocks which will be at the original $3000.
