Nvidia GTX295 or Asus Radeon HD5870

Yeah I did, but now when I try to reinstall the driver I get this error message:-

"Driver Install: The INF file was not found"

Doesn't matter what I do, I get this message

I uninstalled ATI everything in Programs and features, downloaded driversweeper, restarted pc in safe mode as driversweeper recommended, ran driversweeper and restarted into normal windows 7, tried to install driver getting same message as before :(

Update

I have managed to get a driver install off the disc that came with the card, its not the latest though, can anyone help me, of what to do next??

I wouldnt suggest installing that driver if you can help it... Grab the latest from the website, delete the one you have already downloaded as may be corrupt....

If it isnt letting you install then something ATI is still on your comp or the file is Fudged...

Check Everything is uninstalled, you may have missed something, run Driversweeper a couple of times.. (Obv you have to check AMD and Nvidia). Re-download then try again...

I have run driversweeper a few times, also downloaded the driver a few times also, still no joy, getting same message everytime.

Would reinstalling windows fix the prob???

starting to get annoying now LOL

:P I wouldnt go that far. It will solve the problem, yeah... But unless you've got no programs etc to lose I wouldnt recommend it.. Could do a system restore to before you installed the drivers, that will prob sort it.. Then uninstall Nvid drivers, Driversweep and install the new ones...

I reinstalled windows 7 ultimate, been meaning to do it for a while, have installed the new ATI drivers fine, although still when start windows at the message "starting windows" the writing flickers and jumps once, am installing a game, to see if it still crashes.

Watch this space........ I really hope it doesn't, as I have no clue how to fix it then

Na didn't fix the vertical line problem still getting it, when playing about 2 minutes of a game :( apparently I have read the ATI are aware and trying to fix the problem, can't play any games at the moment :(

I have run GPU Tool for ages and never got the problem, but played L4D2 for 2 minutes and it crashed :(

GPU tool? Have you overclocked the card or changed the voltage then? If so, set it back to standard clocks as sounds like an overclock or voltage issue... See if that helps.

If not, Its RMA time I'm afraid... With it being a factory overclocked card you may have got unlucky and gotten a card that doesnt like the clocks they have set, or just a faulty one... ( I am unsure whether they Stress test every card when they set the clocks? Anyone Know?)

Your retailer will old for new it though if it is less than 2 weeks old I thnk! :)

No haven't touched overclock or Voltage, just ran stability test

This is a known issue, a lot of people who have had this problem, have overclocked the card and the problem goes, I have no idea how to overclock the GPU or even where to start

Hmmm, okay... Well you can use AMD GPU clock tool coupled with MSI afterburner to adjust the clocks unless XFX have their own software.

Install both if not, then set the manual fan curve in MSI afterburner, up the fanspeed at say 50degrees to around 50% and increase from there...

Then go to Clock tool and set the Clocks to something like 880 core and up by about 10mhz on the memory clock to see if that helps...

(Now, this part, I'm not sure if it will void any warranty? I doubt it, but you can also up your voltage a little in MSI Afterburner to say 1225 Might sort it.) Anyone know if they bother on the warranty front? Dont want to give the advice and mean you cant RMA.

I have just installed MSI Afterburner and the following screen shot is what its set at, at the mo

So you saying adjust the following:-

Leave Core Voltage as it is.

Adjust Core Clock to 880?

Adjust Memory clock to 1310?

Adjust fan speed to 50%?

And leave everything else???

I have tried changing the settings the only one that will stay is the fan speed at 50% all the others as soon as I hit apply it reverts back to stock settings

I know this is like a step backwards as I have the 5870 xxx edition, but I have used overdrive in CCC to reduce it back to a normal 5870 and guess what

I have managed to play a lvl and still going of L4D2 which is more than I could before....

Is it ok to change the xxx edition back to normal 5870

I changed GPU clock to 850

& Memory clock to 1200

left fan on auto

Please let me know what you think :)

Googling around, there are a heck of alot of replies for "XFX 5870 XXX", XFX HD-587A-ZND9 model number seems prevalent.

Lots of reinstalling of Win7 without joy, dropping in old cards making the systems work ok again. Seems to me that perhaps XFX have dropped the ball with this revision.

I've seen a good number of people dropping the clocks to a standard 5870, similar to what u've done, and they seem to work ok. Funny things happening before desktop initially opens up, grey screens, strange pixels - things u may associate with a bad oc.

Chances are XFX may have shipped a standard bios in these by mistake and it's as simple as the voltages being incorrect or being self-monitored wrongly. Feelings there and about are that they're behaving like standard 5870 cards with XXX stamped on them.

Personally, I drop a card in a known working system, and I've hauled arse with drivers etc to get it working correctly @ stock levels and fail - I'm immediately returning it the store I purchased it from - forget XFX rma, the purchase is too new. Just return it as not working correctly.

Some other manufacturer issued cards with the incorrect bioses in them not too long ago. I would wage decent cash on these things barely hitting the news tho as it bucks the recognizable trend.

Imo return the card asap for refund, or exchange it for a sponsored ASUS model. ASUS may be a number of things, but their gfxcards have impressed me quite a bit l8ly.

You gonna be selling that 295 of yours?

Yep

I think I have fixed mine for the time being, I reset the OC back to a normal 5870 and have had no problems since, played L4D2 & Dirt 2 with no crashing, although Dirt 2 had a little judda in places but something you would hardly notice.

Does anyone else experience little judda every so offen in Dirt 2, only when racing, and not every race, just every so offen???

Now that I have it working, you think the best bet is to RMA it????

If it's the case that ur having to underclock it to get it working yeah. My understanding was u were effectively running it as a standard 5870.

Imo, a standard 5870 itself should have overhead enough to allow oc'ing to atleast XXX levels.

yea i have a xfx 5870 normal version and i cant move the clocks up at all over stock or otherwise it freezes. no big deal for me though because stock settings still gives great performance. so i say stay at stock settings and you wont have any problems.
