Noctua NH-U12P SE2 - Build Help

Hi,

As i've previously killed of components due to heat - Im pretty insistant that this build must be properly cooled. I am purchasing the Fractal Design R2 Case - This case comes with 2 Fans which although make very little noise, don't push too much air. I am planning on putting both these fans at the front, I then intend on having the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Cooler, Due to the Push-Pull configuration I'll be going for, I wondered if having another NH-U12P fan as the exhast would create an air tunnel, effectively keeping the case and CPU as cool as possible.

I was considering having a 140mm roof fan but I want to keep the PC as quiet as possible, plus the fact it might not actually do much.

With the front fans not pulling in too much air, will the single Noctua NH-U12P be enough for an exhaust?

For reference here's the build I am aiming for.

  • Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (Socket LGA1366)
  • Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard(Socket 1366) DDR3
  • OCZ Obsidian 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600Mhz
  • Fractal Design Define R2 Midi Tower Case - Black Pearl
  • OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply
  • Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler/AM2/AM2+/AM3)
  • Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache (For RAID 0)
  • LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter

Thanks.

You really need a dedicated exhaust fan fella. Tbh Id change all the fans in that case too. If cooling was top priority Id also have bought something different. Noctua fans are great and quiet but because of this carry a ££ premium.

just remember.

normally in the world of fans, bigger is better :D as they dont have to spin as fast as the smaller ones too push as much air. Meaning they are creating less noise.

i would consider the below:

Scythe Kaze Jyuni

Enermax Magma TWISTER Fan

Enermax Cluster TWISTER Fan

i would suggest noctua fans. But they dont appeal to me with there colours and price :D

Cheers for the replies guys.

When you said you'de have bought something different, Are you refering to the Case or Cooler? Im not too bothered about noise, although don't want to be deafened :)

Thing is im still learning about Overclocking, so I won't be going any higher than the standard GHz (for the mean time) And seeing your review on the NH-D14 I thought the predecessor would be as good for something running standard clock speed, and might actually fit in the case :)

Cheers for them fan ideas, they seem to have pretty good reviews.

i think tom means you need a front fan and a exhoust fan not ither or,noctua fans are the shizz but as mentiond they are pricey but ive only ever used noctuas after i used silverstone, coolermaster, enermax, thermalright and scythe

Ahh right, Cheers mate.

I think I'll stick a Noctua as exhaust then - My other question is do I need 2 exhausts? I wont be having massivlely powerful intake fans, so I thought one noctua exhaust would be enough .. or would I need a 140mm on the roof aswell?

If you plan out your air flow well then you'll get the most out of any fans. But fast and quiet is a good thing. The CFMs the better in my book. My loudest fans right now are my GPU fans. Everything else is just wind noise. That's with 4 Scythe Slipstream 1900rpm fans that move a ton of air. I'm not picky on noise but they seem decently quiet to me.

i think its best to have more exhoust than intake but ime not sure,i have 2 intakes and 3 exhoust

front and side intake

rear and roof exhoust

noctua fans are quality in a lot of ways

Well sure they're great fans but why are they holding on to those awful looks? It's the only reason I haven't and will never buy noctua fans for a rig with a window :p

that i dont no mate,if they did black ones then they would be so much better,i tend to go for performance over looks and sometimes they follow suit but sometimes they dont (noctua)

Not bothered by the aesthetics, as long as it moves air :)

More fans doesnt mean its better boys. Quality over quantity.

You also have to take in consideration negative air pressure and causing too much air turbulence. It would be unwise to pair a cheap CM fan as an exhaust with my Slipstreams as the CM would not be able to push out enough air. This would cause too much negative air in my case and would actually reduce the cooling efficiency.

That's what Im getting at - I think I'll only need the one Noctua, Because it's really good .. even though I'll have 2 intakes. Mainly due to the front ones pusing in not a huge amount of air, and having 2 powerful noctuas drawing out air that isn't being pushed in - as you said will effect cooling.

like i said its best to have more exhaust fans than intake,so having a fan like a noctua in the back would be ok but IMO i would just kitt it all out with them just do it fan by fan i did as i no they are silly expensive especialy as i have 7 fan mounts lol

7x£16 you do the math lol

ime not saying you do ime saying it would be exspensive if you did as you can have 7+ fans if you wanted to

ither way have more exhaust and noctua make awsome fans
