New Thread Post Limit Against Spamming

As we've seen a number of these odd spamming threads lately appear maybe put into place a block so only people who have posted a certain number of times *10-20 maybe ?* in existing threads can create their own threads.

And to get around the "New Member" or "Introductions" threads you could put in place an approval system so each new thread in there would have to be approved by an appointed mod before it goes live.

I'd also suggest a minimum post count of 10,000 before being allowed to post images containing a likeness to Nicolas Cage :lol:

In theory that could work, but what you will find is that the spammers will go nuts on existing threads posting in those instead.

Having run and been part of a couple of forum admin teams in the past, I have seen this happen, you wake up one morning and find posts from the spammers in hundreds of threads, if not every single thread on the site (they use a bot to mass post them), and what you effectively get is an admin team working for a few hours clearing the threads of the spam, or in my case, formulating an SQL query that then wipes out the offending posts within a matter of minutes.

I have known it to be so bad that some forums have restored from the previous days backups, to get rid of the spam, which then looses some genuine posts made.

There are mods to the forum that can be made, one such example I wrote many years back that only enables new members to post once per hour until an admin has approved the post and / or the member. Granted this is not perfect solution, but there isn't one to this problem, everything that can be done to get around these issues, can also be gotten around by the spammers out there.

We're a little thin on the ground with mods at the minute Dice, so adding more approval work would not help unfortunately. I'm semi-afk at the minute due to new job and limited access to the site, but the guys are trying their best. Once Feronix is back on the case (and not leaking) things should get better.

Thanks for the suggestion though, it's always encouraging to see that people are keeping involved with the discussion.

We really cant limit people any more than we do - as long as you lot just report the posts if you see them someone will get to it ASAP

from one post today (I used the inbuilt google one and another Vietnamese-> english translator):
Currently we specialize in supplying bananas and bananas old white Siamese South America in large numbers, from 18-20cm tall ( from the leaves up to vote ) , plants have 5-7 leaves , ready for planting out field , productivity depends on the ability to take care of
