New system idea

Ok guys,

Just got a new job and am looking to upgrade my PC which is not great lets face it lol.

Looking at the following -

3500+ Venice / Winnie

1Gb Corsair PC3200 (2.5cl)

Asus SLI Deluxe board

PCP&C 510 Deluxe SLI

Asetek waterchill until I can upgrade to DD on the CPU maybe

The usual DVD-RW, DVD-ROM, Floppy, 120Gb IDE Cudda HDD...

Now for the graphics, heres the options i THINK maybe doable

2x6600GT's in SLI

6800 in Single

2x6800GTs in SLI

6800U single

I really want to give the SLI thing a go but not sure if 2x6800GTs is going to be within my budget and I dont want to skimp on it to start with because knowing me I'll end up buying 2x6800U's another couple of months down the line and regret it.

Well there it is, lemme know what you think.

Also is the difference really there with the Venice to back up the price difference?

Cheers

That gigabyte with 2 6600GTs on one board is pretty good from what i have seen, not very overclockable but beats 6600GTs in SLI. Difficult to fix extra cooling onto, but good value for money.

What Asetek block do you have on the CPU? If it's the antarctica then it might not be worth changing, as long as you have high enough flow rate, the antarctica performs pretty well according to the overclockers.com tests (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/wbsum.asp). Also DD, is 1/2" ID, Asetek is 1/2" or 10mm OD so you'll need to change the fittings around, so i would go for the all in one upgrade if you are going to change anything.

Really don't see the point in buying two 6600GT's a go when a single 6800GT will outperform it, require less power, be cooler, allow more room for PCI cards and possibly overclock better.

Out of those options I would probably get 2 x 6800GTs

Do you need this PC soon? As you could wait for the next gen cards...

I would buy the most powerful card you can afford like the 6800u just one until you got the cash

I would go for a dfi mobo too if you want a 3500 make sure it is subzero friendly some are some aren't I have one for sale that is its supposed to do 3jig under a mach

Ram get some tccd if you can afford it realy good ram :)

I would get a single 6800GT, that way you get good preformance & then you upgrade when your ready.... as next genereration is just round the corner!!!!

ocuk say stock in 2-3 weeks, from gibbo himself (hes there stock control)

so call it 4 weeks to be safe?

I cant reccomend someone to spend £350 on an ultra knowing this, tbh id just get a cheap as you can find 6800gt or x800xt

I wouldn't buy a GTX though, as you know what will happen - R520 will then come out then the 7800u aka G80?

Hey BAcon... sorry to be a bit dim but is that overclockers or overclock (.co.uk)

Sorry to knock the distributers-I know its not their fault but I also remember when SLI/NF4 was about to arrive- overclockers advertised dates for delivery- the first date being the 6th December and this kept getting pushed back to...mid-January, I think. I got fed up waiting for I bought an NForce3, then NF4 appeared in stores 4 days later (grr)

Has Gibbo been told this from his suppliers? NVidia could have initial supplies delayed, it could happen.

Also, while I`m nagging about release dates etc, overclockers are asking £400 upwards on the pre-order for the AMD X2`s- I sense slow sales there....

:)

Well said, my feelings exactly :)

If you go for the 6800GT then do consider looking in the second handmarkets in the US, with the weak dollar you can actually get some very good prices (i myself got a Gainward 6800GT golden sample guaranteed to overclock to Ultra speeds for about £185 including shipping!)

www.overclockers.co.uk

i know the dates are never correct, but thats the dates hes been given by companies such as BFG, XFX etc

The dual core prices are like that all over matey, cpucity i think it is ahve them for simular prices, they will come down once released and a UK rrp price has been decided

yeh nick thats also a point to make, and is why buying a ultra is so damm pointless, grab a GT

or get a x850xt/pe now, and when ATI crossfire arrives grab a r520 and ATI board, use the r520 as a master card, and use your x850xt/pe as the slave

sorted tbh

Hi guys, well I have to say I've never seen so many people say 6800GT in one thread lol.

I may wait for the release of the new cards and then get them but I wont be getting any of the new cards. They are too much to spend in one hit. Master G I have to disagree with what you said about the Gigabyte 6600 Dual GT. I read in CPC a few months ago that it performs worse than 2x6600GTs in SLi and is VERY poor at overclocking. This was never going to be an option as you also HAVE to use the Gigabyte board, and personally I hate them lol.

Anybody have any ideas on what the next gen cards are gonna cost? I do agree that all the due dates will probably be wrong but you can bet that the price of the GTs will drop a week or so before they are released. Happened with the 9800s when X800 was released :D.

A note on Crossfire, it only works on the ATi chipsets and those havn't really started showing up so it'd be an AWSOME thing to have but I dont think it's gonna happen any time soon.

Thanks for the advice so far, keep it coming please.

Also is the price difference between the Venice and Winiie worth it? Will I get a better clock and faster performance in games with the Venice?

Cheers
