MSI 880GM-E41 AMD 880G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard £52.79 aria

AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.20GHz Quad Core 95w (Socket AM3) Processor £77.40 aria

4GB Kingston HyperX 1600 (2x2GB) Dual Channel Memory Kit £36.95 aria

Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler £19.99

450W corsair psu (alredy got it)

i went with that motherboard as it has 6 sata ports and built in graphics thats what i am looking for on the board

i will be using a couple 1TB drives that i have got just now plus in about 6-7 months i will be geting 5x 2TB hdds

my buget is £200 max

will not be overclocking it or eny thing

and my case seprit from the budget above

X-Case RM 400/10 V2 - 10 Internal HDD or Add X-Case Hotswap Module for 10 Hotswap -Inc Rail Kit

TBH with a server u are not really worried about clock speed but the more cores the better. I would seriously look at gettin 2 x 4gb ram sticks thou, servers need more memory than anything and at least then in the future u can add another 8gb!

ya good idea will get the

8GB Patriot Viper II 'Sector 5' (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit in sted

I not long ago started planning a NAS-server, and my brain just melted deciding what route to take and what I can get. Good luck to you. But I did find researching the costs, is that building up your own tower is clearly cheaper than any pre-built system if you know your way around setting it up.

Are you looking to run any sort of RAID? (Even if I'm not much help in that department.

Also if you get the extra RAM you can look at using virtual servers (Vsphere, Hyper-v), then you can run multiple servers on the one host machine. Just an idea and if you need any help drop me a line, servers are kinda my specialist subject lol.

btw wot o/s u looking at running on the server as that will also determine wot kinda hardware you require?

wont be using raid i will just keep all my drives in singal drives mode then have some software to do mirrer backups between 2 drives

the os i will be use windows server 2008 64bit at the moment

this server is mainly just to put all my media on like all my dvd ript on to it and tv ep pictures and music

and have it to streem to my tv

not to shoure about virtual server will just stike have it as a singal server

will not be hosting eny websites or eny thing like that

i am new to server all i now what to do with server 2008 is setup file sharing and bit of active directory but i wont the serve to be isolated from the internet

as much as posibal apart from having to do updates

If your building a NAS server I always suggest a decent RAID card, if you have the money then get one with about 5-10 ports for future proofing. You do not need a powerful CPU, something that runs around 2ghz would suffice, but again I would suggest the more RAM u can afford the better (again for future proofing)

i tride to use windows 7 as my os for the server but when i tryd to setup my media stremind player on my tv it keeps asking for my user name and password i put it in but just keep geting logon faild but it works ok with server 2008 and 2003 checkd the windows firewall and file sharing is on ok so dont now what is rong

been looking aroud for a raid card but cant find one cheap enuf i will try get one i the futur but will only spend £150 - 200 max on one

so should i keep the quad core or save some mony and go with a dual core for just simpal file/nas server

Personaly I would keep the quad core but dont worry about clock speed, just buy the lowest speed quad core available. If you can not afford a seperate RAID card then get a motherboard with built in RAID support. If you do this thou make sure the board has plenty of SATA ports so you can add hard drives, that way if u ever want to extend the fetures of the server u can

ya thats wye i have chosen that motherboard it has 6 sata ports and suports raid plus when i go to ad more drives i have seen some pci 4 ports sata cards with raid support at about £50-70 so will get about one or tow of them to

just seen this rade card on aria will that be ok

LSI SAS 9211-8i SATA+SAS RAID PCI-E 2.0 Controller - Full Kit My link

it looks like it plugs in to a pci-e 4x port but havent seen eny motherboards with them can u just put it in to a pci-e 16x port

I was looking at an 8-port Adaptec to run either RAID 5 or 6, since I've seen on-board RAID struggle with anything more complex than RAID 0 or 1. It's good to learn I shouldn't skim on RAM for the server.

But I gave up research after struggling to find a backplane that had status indicator lights that did more than indicate power or drive activity, I'm not sure if they even make such aftermarket products. I guess the RAID card has beep codes or the 'Nightrider' lights have a purpose.

The 4X card should work in 4X, 8X, and 16X PCI-e slots.

Sorry SG12004, if it looks like I've hijacked your thread, not my intention.

thats ok but thanks for that last bit

seen this card to

Highpoint RocketRAID 2640x1(RR2640x1) 4 channel Internal PCI-e x1 to SAS/SATA II RAID controller

can u run 2 separet raid cards ok on the same computer

To use Windows 7 as a server OS you need to make an account on the 'foreign' machine identical to the account on the server. Now you know.

ya dun that i could still logon ok from another computer and have acsess to all the data but on my cyclone mkv network media player it just keeps saying logon faild

can only seem to logon from other computers but not the network media player

you cant make accounts on the media player all it lets u do is put in the server ip or name and user name and passwor that u have on the server

but it works ok with win server 2003 and 2008 ok
