New rig.

Hi everybody.

Since my good old system is starting to feel the strain i have started to plan a whole new system. I am currently rolling on an amd64 3700 skt939 ofc, dfi lparty SLi-DR, a real battle hardened 7800GT and 2gig of geil value ram! Had this system for about 2+ years now and im looking to build something that will last me just as long.

That was my first ever self built system and this time around i am looking to make a real tuned power house, so to make sure i am getting things right i thought i would ask the pros on this forum everything

Ok so to start off i was looking at motherboards, CPU's and RAM. Thought the new 790i chipset looked good after seeing the Asus Striker II extreme review on this site but i have a few questions about it.

After reading This Thread (clicky) i got a tad confused, say i wanted to pair the striker 2 with a Q9300 and some beefy corsair dominator DDR3 PC3-14400 ram. That would mean to get the 1:1 ratio from my ram and CPU i would need to raise the FSB from 333 to 450? 500 if i wanted to push my RAM to 2000Mhz?

First question, is that last paragraph right? And if so could a Q9300 be pushed that far?

I dont think the Q9300 can be pushed all that far as they have a limited multi, but i might be mistaken.

Can i ask your budget?

My budget is.. relative. I dont mind shelling out for some serious hardware if its worth it, but i will try and save money were i can. Im on a students earnings for now so upgrades will be more in stages than a whole system at once.

Just another note, everybody feel free to give their recommendations and opinions.

First of all, you will not be able to get that sort of FSB easily on a dual, and definitely not on a quad. TBH, you may as well just upgrade the graphics card that you have in your current system, there won't be any problems for gaming with that, and I would say that it could last you a bit longer (I wouldn't be too surprised if it was alright for another year).

Noooo... Well i mean you could go down the line of the intel top of the line quads or say a Q6600 and clock it to 3.6 pretty easy.

GFX ide say wait a month or so and check out the next set of cards due out this month.

Mobo a P45 or x38/48. See what kinda deals you can find.

PSU around 700-800w would be good. And make sure its a good brand, this is where some people tend to skimp, and i wouldnt.. A good solid PSU could last you a long time. PCP&C are a good psu make.

Sorry for being such a novice but i was under the impression that the Yorkfields were just an updated (ie better)45nm version of the Kentsfields?

Then i saw at the end of the asus striker 2 review that they took the Q6600 "easily" to 490fsb which led me to believe Q9300 could handle it

The Q6600 is 65nm and the Q9300 is 45nm. The 6600 has the higher multi so easier to oc.

Out of the Q9300 and the Q6600, the Q6600 is the absolute obvious choice !

- Higher multiplier

- Bigger cache

- Cheaper

Aye the chips are newer the unlocked multi on the Q6600 makes it the must have for that price bracket.

Well it is not unlocked, therefore u need the QX6850.. and therefore not attractive at all, but with 9x multiplier it is plenty to maximize your cpu overclock, if u still complain that 9x mulitplier is not enough u can opt for a Q6700, also dropped allot in price, but yet the Q6600 is still best buy.

One thing has to be mentioned all newer batches of the Q6600 PFO starting with: Q8xxxx, are really bad in Overclocking, topping around 3.2-3.4ghz at max where as the older L7xxxx batches topped around 3.6-3.8 ghz

i would rather save money and have a pentium 4...i had a q9300 and a q6600 and the price difference didnt seem worth it

Just run 3DMark06. You will sooner or later realise why you would rather have a Q9300 or Q6600 over a Pentium 4.
