New rig time

Well technology has moved on and so has prices it would seem but I'm putting together a spec for a new rig, any thoughts and advice welcome.

MotherBoard Gigabyte Z68X-UD7

Wanted a board with 2 x PCIex x 16 slots and the P67 and as up to date as possible.

CPU Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz

Some will say go for the i5 but I already have one of these left over from a customers order recently

CPU Fan Corsair H60 Water Cooling Unit

Do want to overclock a little bit so these seem reasonable and more compact than a massive air cooler.

RAM 2 x 8GB Mushkin Redline Ridgeback #997000 (2x4GB)

Based on the reviews here, seems the memory of choice

VGA Card 2 x Point of View 3GB GeForce GTX 590 Charged

Really want some monster power for surround gaming

HDD #1 OCZ Vertex 3 240GB

Toss up between this and the Corsair GT, but OCZ have a far better community and support seems top notch

Case Corsair Graphite 600T - White

Personal choice, seems a stunning bit of kit

PSU OCZ ZX Series 1250W

Again a toss up between this and corsair AX1200, both Gold level and so on, the few extra watts may come in handy with those 590's

BLU-RAY Plextor PX-LB950SA

Decent blu-ray drive

DVD-RW Plextor PX-L890SA

One of the best drives for CD ripping, want to rip my CD collection to MP3

I've already got a trio of Dell U2311H's that were recently on special offer, storage is not an issue as all data is on a network nas drive hence the need for only one drive.

Thanks in advance

Id ditch the i7 and buy an i5 and save yourself 60/70 quid for very little difference and swap the h60 is a solid cooler but if your oc-ing you cpu then id go for the noctua nh-d14 mate - other than that its a very well spec'd machine buddy

My standard answer right now to anyone planning to outlay big cash on hardware:

Wait for the new(er) mobos that are coming. IMO PCIe3.0/Quad Memory/USB3/SATA3 mobos are a real reason to spend big monies.

I wanna see the likes of GTX680 & HD7xxx paired up with PCIe3.0 for a start. Quad memory 'should' be a substantial step forward in itself, albeit with ddr3 (ffs). USB/SATA are growing as standards.

Personally I'd be pissed off to do all the spending, especially after waiting, in your case, since 2008.

Late this year I'd envisage the drooling to comense.

The latest cards dont saturate PCIe 2.1 so i cant imagine 3.0 having much of a difference. However with AMD's bulldozer release round the corner it might prove beneficial to hang fire a few more weeks and invest in an 8/12 core CPU depending on performance

I see your point fella's but honestly you could always wait for the next technology round the corner in this game. Given the grunt on tap there it should last me another 3 years I'd have thought, or at the very least two years.

I've heard that argument before.

Think of it like harddrives that don't saturate SATAI speeds. Pop them in SATAII or SATAIII ports and they'll be overall faster.

(switch in firewire/usb/etc, even memory and cpus in slots/sockets that can handle more bandwidth)

Classic is network speeds.
