New rig, just need GPU to complete the build.

Okay so monday this week my old rig went belly up on me. Well the Mobo at least....

Figured why not start a new rig. My inlaws gifted me a new mobo to replace my failed one last monday as an early xmas gift. Awesome family... anyways I had an i7 920 and they got me a p67 mobo. I went and picked up an i5 2500k, and while I was shopping around online I found some solid deals on other goodies. I went ahead and bought 16gb of ram and 120 gig ssd drive and Haf x case. Figured I should jsut go ahead and start my project early.

Pieced it all together, overclocks fantastic and hold great so far running prime95 all night at a solid 4.5.

Well let me get to the point

I have a ATI HD 5870 currently. GPU is the only thing I can not find a deal on anywhere. Its not that the GPU is bad and or needs to be replaced due to faults. It is however the weakest link in my rig. Im fighting the notion of buying a new GPU because I know the new series has got to be coming out soon (7000 or 600's).

My question is .. I have never been one to buy the for front new launch of GPU's in the past. The cost is normally outrageous... With that said im struggling to debate waiting on new guys to come out and wondering if they will be worth the cost, Going w/ one of the current big GPU's maybe a 570 (I just dont see the value in 580 or 590). Or even dipping my hands into SLi or Xfire.

Im getting confused understanding benchmarks with the tons of GPU's out now, single units or SLi's. Plus new guys coming out.

I guess im trying to figure out the best value in GPU. SLi two lower cards, get one big guy like 570.. Wait it out see how the new guys are and see how far prices drive down.. What do you guys think?

I have the itch now and buying stuff and hate not being able to max out these new games. BF3, skyrim , and new SWTOR.

p.s. OH if this helps I have a samsung Snyc Master 245bw monitor w/ rez 1920-1200 (would run games at that rez)

I'd say wait for the 7000 AMD series cards at least. They probably won't be as expensive as the Nvidia 600 series cards and if the performance of the 7000 cards isn't what you expected then you could always buy an Nvidia 500/AMD 6000 series card.

Yes I would also wait a month till 7000 cards come out.

you both failed to read the whole post me thinks

Not everybody has the $$ to buy now and see if it is better and replace later if it isnt.

Yeah I'm with ya on not being able to do the latest greatest thing bro. Since ya have the itch now a 570GTX is an amazing card and will serve you well. I have one in my rig and I struggle with NO games at all. IMHO waiting for the next thing to come along is a never ending trip as there is always something new around the corner. But if you can swing it the 580 will do better

I believe I didn't fail

. If he waits to see how the 7000 series cards perform and what the prices are like, then he could choose to get a 7000 series card or fall back on the previous gen of cards. I know you would never recommend an AMD product

Nah nobody fails..

I had told my self im going to spend $300 on a GPU. Then I started thinking well I could just wait on the new guys to come and A. Buy a top of the line 500 or 6000 series GPU for lower price or spend an extra couple 100 on the latest and greatest..

All in all most of my post was me itching for new and be trying to figure out best bang for buck money wise.. Its not that money is a big issue on the matter I jsut don't want to throw away money on bad value, if that makes sense.

I do agree waiting on the latest and greatest and that best deal is a never ending cycle.

I did post this same question another board and one suggested spend a little cash and get another 5870 and then wait for new guys to come out next year and buy a good one, save up for it. This is another idea.

What do you guys think of these EVGA Geforce GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores 1280MB

for just under 300 bucks? Been researching all day off and on. Seems solid for under 300 bucks.

I cant find out much about the new series coming out. 600s or 7000's

I had the vinalla 560Ti when they first came out was a great card. Get one cant go wrong with EVGA and if you decide you need MOAR POWER they have a step-up program that allows you to step up to a higher end card for the difference betweem what ya paid and new cards price and shipping. Thats how I got my 570HD

I have not heard of this upgrade program your speaking of, switch old card to newer or better for the price difference. There is no way I would not want to take advantage of this.

Here is what where im at. I got a little xmas bonus from work because I offered to work christmas day. So I now I have an additional 400 bucks I had not planned on having.. This being said, it really doesn't change anything. It just gives me the option to really choose what ever I want. Though I don't know I that I want to spend almost a 1000 on a gpu.

So all in all I am thinking and trying to research on what a probable price of a 600 series card would cost or more importantly what the price drop on a 500 series would be.

Im still leaning in the direction of 570. Then maybe a 2nd 570 for sli later if I need more of a boost. Im wondering how much difference the price will be on a 670 or what the 570's "should" cost when the 600's come out..

Well anyways thats my food for thought.

oh reason im looking at 570 over 580 is I just can't get over the cost. 580 is ALOT more money over the 570 for an average or 6 fps on the games I play. Just doesn't seem worth the money imho.

Even if you tend towards a 570 i'd wait. Your current card can't be that bad to fill 1-2 months as of now. And once the 7xxx series of cards are out not only the 6xxx series but the 5xx series aswell will drop in price.

Unless AMD continues their newly invented strategy of epic fail that is
