New motherboard or PSU failed?

Hi,

I received a new motherboard to replace my old one (as I stupidly bent some pins when cleaning old thermal paste) however I'm not sure if this motherboard is DOA or my PSU has packed in.

I'm getting the problem that the computer will not switch on, no fans spin or lights nothing happens, however there have been a few moments where it seems to be working ok and even it was able to boot into Windows 10 desktop!

If I plug the PSU back into my old motherboard with just a case fan, then this switches on ok (although the PSU makes some clicking noises as if it's going on and off, maybe because there is no CPU)... If then reconnect the PSU back to the new motherboard it starts working again! (no constantly clicking) OR at least until I plug in the graphics card, then nothing switches on again... If I take the graphics card and everything back out and just have the CPU fan connected then the new motherboard will not respond until I seemingly re-attach the motherboard power cable...

I've been having problems recently where my old system would just randomly shutoff with the fans running at 100%, I thought this might be due to overheating but it will happen when I'm just web-browsing or playing games... It might shutdown after 10mins of browsing or after hours of playing games... So this doesn't seems to be a overheating problem so this point to the PSU maybe cutting out momentarily but the fans stay on?? My old cpu fan was the intel stock one which really needs a dusting so I have replaced it with a gigantic twin 135mm fan (which was getting around 27 degrees idle, on the one time the new motherboard booted)

System Setup:
CPU: 4770K
CPU Fan: Be Quiet Dark Rock TF
PSU Corsair AX760
New motherboard: Gigabyte Z97P-D3
Gfx Card: Palit Nvidia 1070 Dual Fan
Ram: Crucial Balistix 8GB*2
OS: Windows 10

Note: Removing gfx card does not fix it.

Right -

Having the old mobo connected to 'power the fan' is p[retty meaningless. Youre just confusing matters with that, especially without a cpu.

From my understanding here your issue is either your GPU or the GPU power cable.

I got the system working again by shorting the CMOS pins on the motherboard and now it switches back on and can boot to Windows using onboard GPU

Soon as put the 1070 GPU into the PCIE slot without being connected to the PSU it refused to boot I then again shorted the CMOS and now its started back up again

Im not sure whats going on, is this just some really picky motherboard?? :O I've never experienced needing to clear the CMOS each time I add hardware...

EDIT:

Just came back to it after 5mins and now its refusing to turn back on and I haven't changed the hardware at all.... even shorting the CMOS pins no longer works... I wonder if the motherboard CMOS battery is defective as the computer wasn't plugged in at the time

EDIT2:
Swapped the battery for the one from my old motherboard and not fixed it...
Kinda back to where I was this morning no gfx card is installed, shorting the CMOS no longer works and the system will not power back on, seems only thing I can do is to re-attach the motherboard from PSU

Ok I've spent a bit more time on it... I've taken the gfx card totally out to disregard it.

Weirdly if I remove the mains power lead of the system for a few minutes (eg to add new hardware), it will then refuse to switch back on until I leave the mains attached to the PSU for a few minutes (and the switch on the PSU set to off, won't work if left on)

Seems the motherboard needs a few minutes "warm up period" (or something is discharging) before the system can be switched on.

Sadly I don't have access to another PSU

Thats cold start - could be bios - could be the PSU - its fairly common though. Dont worry about it.

Could also explain your GPU problems but you HAVE to plug the power in for it or the system just wont start.

Sounds like everything is fine to me tbh

Well I got my new motherboard delivered from Amazon today, Asus instead of the Gigabyte one and it works absolutely perfectly!!!

Thanks all for your input, I was getting worried that it was the PSU but seems to be ok atm
