new motherboard, cpu and ram suggestions

Hi all,

I'm starting to look into upgrading to a new motherboard, cpu and ram in the next few months so am looking for some suggestions.

I'm currently running an i7-950 with 3x2gb sticks of 1866 corsair dominator ram on a sabertooth x58 mobo, alongside this I have crossfired 7970s an SSD and a 850w seasonic psu which will all be staying.

The current colour theme I have is blue so anything blue or black would be preferred, I've had a quick look the hyper x fury ram which seems fairly good and in blue/white and looked at the rampage iv black edition but that looks a bit pricey and overkill for what I'd be using the PC for which would be mainly gaming with a bit of photo and video editing. PC is already gpu and cpu water cooled so that would be mostly moving over as well and hopefully the xspc raystorm block I have will be compatable with the new cpu. I'm also eyeing up the 900d as a new case to replace my HAF-X.

any suggestions greatly appreciated and as I said earlier it's not a build that will be happening urgently so could gather parts gradually and wait if theirs something worth waiting for on the horizon.

Hi,

As you're currently on 1366 I would assume you'd like to switch to 2011?

If so I would say (Unless you're desperate to move over to a new rig tomorrow) then you should 100,000% wait for the x99 Chipset (2011-3) and DDR4, it wil be a massive performance gain from what you have now, the PSU will still be Ok.

Although if you wanted to go with Z97 then I'm not sure about any blue motherboards, I would personally recommend the Gigabyte Z97X-SOC Force (However it's orange and black) This way you can stick with all the same components, (Buy 1 more DIMM or get rid of 1, optionally you could upgrade your RAM and get a really nice Corsair Dominator Platinum Kit) And then, pick up a Devils Canyon CPU.

As for your watercooling setup... I don't know if the CPU block came with 1155 mounting hardware but if it did then you'll have no problem but I don't think (Could be wrong) but 1366 isn't the same as 2011 so you'd need to pick up a new CPU block OR get some compatible mounting HW from the manufacturer (If it's available)

hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not in an immediate hurry to get the new rig up and running just at the stage where I'm putting the feelers out to see what's about and what may be coming then slowly putting things together and by the looks of things the x99 chipset will probably be what I aim for.

i'll also need to try and find the bits that came with the waterblock but i'm sure it had a few options with it, fingers crossed though as it's doing a good job and would be a shame to get a new one.

How about a 4770K and a Biostar Hi-Fi Z87X 3D. you want it blue right?

Dude I think you've recommended enough Biostar motherboards for today. Perhaps slow down on the digging threads up and f'ng with them before you are an official serial thread necro.

starting to see the x99 boards coming out now and looking pretty good so far, also starting to think I may be limiting myself a lot by sticking to a specific colour  why do most the good boards have to be red...oh well.
