New GPU advice.

I am building a new pc and have all parts, just need to find a GPU.

I am not a hardcore gamer but would like to play games on 1080p 60hz ultra, the pc is also my media centre so movie playback.

I would really like the GPU to play movies at 4K if possible as may get a 4K tv in next few years (but I know things change quickly and could always upgrade just my GPU later).

I was thinking should I hold off until the Pastel comes out next year as they are claiming the performance difference is large. There are also so many choices of cards, I am thinking a stock Nvidia may look best n my pc as it is a Black/White with hints of green in.

I really don't want to spend more than £300 if I don't have to.

Any suggestions welcome.

New PC Specs:
NZXT H440 Case
Asus Z170-A MB
I7 6700k CPU
NZXT Kraken X61 AIO
2x8GB Corsair Dominator Ram
Samsung 950 Pro M.2 256GB
Samsung 850 Evo SSD 250GB
Leadtek Superflower 1200w PSU
Windows 10 OS

Best bang for the buck is the AMD r9 390. It also recently got a pretty big price cut but Idk if that has carried over to the UK as of yet. Either way it's a very strong card for the money. For brands I'd say the MSI Gaming version of probably hands down the best built card. Other top variants would be Sapphire or XFX

If you really need Nvidia the closest thing to it would be the 970. Again MSI is a top brand as is EVGA. Really all of them are pretty good

To be honest, I would actually recommend a GTX 970 especially if you are considering playing 4k Movies through a TV in the future.

Amazing cards and you can generally OC them quite a bit. May have some coil whine and they are realistically limited to 3.5GB of its 4GB. Though the latter is pretty much a non issue at the resolution you are gaming at.

Dont really recommend the 390 for 1080p, unless you can get it for quite a bit less than a 970.

Pascal is without a doubt worth the wait, however whether or not you are able to wait until then is something only you know (given OP doesnt include any information like that)

Thanks for your comments.

I was thinking about a 970 originally.

Just thinking is 2 x 970 better than 1 x 980?

I am not sure when Pascal is due out to the public.

sli is only better on applications that actually use it.

also. 2 cards will use more power. generate more heat and cause more problems.

the extra cost of a 980 over a 970 to me doesnt match the extra performance.

So are you saying the 970 offers more bang for the money than the 980?

A 980ti isnt a particularly good option if your plan is the upgrade when Pascal arrives, as its value will likely drop more than the 970s.

I would suggest sticking with a single 970 and just OC it as high as you can ASSUMING it cant already run the games that you want it to. Do not even bother considering the 980 for 1080p, it is already overpriced as it is and does not provide much over the 970 at lower resolutions.
