New Gaming Rig

Right so after much confusion with parts and what not, this is what i've come up with so far.

Case - Silverstone Temjin TJ11

Motherboard - MSI P67 Big-Bang Marshal B3

CPU - Intel i7 2600k

CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D14

PSU - Corsair 1200w Modular

Memory - G.Skill Ripjaws X

GPU - MSI GeForce GTX 570 Twin Frozr II OC SLI

Storage - Revodrive x2 240gb, 2x WD Caviar Black HDD 1Tb

OS - Windows 7 64+ Ultimate

The rig will be used mainly for gaming purposes as well as some Graphic work in Adobe and what not.

Let me know what you think

You sure the Cosmos has room for the Maximus IV?

Looks like it would be a very tight fit to me as it's wider than ATX.

EDIT: Apologies got the Cosmos mixed up with the Scout, oopsie.

if its mainly for gaming get a i5 2500k instead? and a gtx 590 unless you want a wind tunnel...why not get one revo drive for OS and programmes and the WD blacks can be for storage anyways? you arent going to use 500GB on just Os and programmes are you? and that ram isnt brilliant, get some mushkin or g skill

you might want to look at the Cosmos PURE looks epic imo, but thats just me

He'll be doing graphic work as well so he'll benefit from those extra threads on the 2600k.

The Revodrive x2 is a product of itself it doesn't mean he wants 2 of them, nearly thought the same myself.

That RAM is missing a fancy heatsink and super timings, it's still decent RAM.

And for the 6990 it is the better performing dual GPU card and AFAIK its problems are undermined when left at 6950 speeds.

I choose the i7 2600k mainly because of the hyperthreading ability when i'm working on graphics and such and encoding for video on a rare occasion and i saw that the I5 2500k doesn't have it enabled.

From the benches and reviews i've seen it out performs the GTX590 in pretty much everything and its much dearer here then the 6990. I do know that its like a jumbo taking off but i can deal with the noise rather then having an under performing card. I was considering doing a Crossfire of 6950 and unlocking the bios and overclocking them to match the 6970 as they outperform both the 590 and the 6990 however i was thinking more of the future in that one as i beleive triple crossfire with 6950's doesn't do very well and also having three of those cards would make a hell of a racket.

Edit: I just saw it may have looked like i was getting two Revo drives lol, its the Revodrive x2

The revo drive would be for the OS, adobe suit and a few games as well as whatever graphic/video work i'm working on. The other 2 drives where going to be storage to replace my 3 existing drives of 1.5Tb of work and materials.

I really didn't think the difference would be noticeable plus it being $70 dearer here then the corsair when choosing Mushkin. Also from the sites i have here in Australia its only available up to 1600mhz for 6gb before it reaches $300 and i'm not paying that much for memory.

I had a look at the case, wasn't a fan of it tbh, The cosmos s just hits my sweet spot i guess i don't know lol

Just buy a pair of 570's and save some money, still have silence and still outperform the 590 and 6990.

The 6990 is not a card I could live with. Ive got both and I still use the 590

That's what most of the Mushkin kits are, but they'll have some very low timings. They have got some 2133 kits on the way but they haven't been released yet.

Well considering that a pair of 6950's are about $500 and a pair of 570's are rougly $850 i figured i would just go for the highest atm for round the same price which from what i saw was the 6990, but i spose not being able to really hear the 6990 i cant really make an educated guess on how loud they really are. Both the GTX590 and the HD6990 are around $1000 so i GTX590 might be a better choice lol..

Yea i saw some that where at 6-8-6-24 however they had fins and i didnt think they would fit under the noctua heat sink, plus it being $140 for 1600mhz

Hmm well at least that gives me more of a dimensions that acceptable under the Noctua, i wasnt quite sure how much space where available. But how much of a difference is the memory i choose to the Mushkin, performance wise, i'm still a little hazy on that part. If i've worked it out correctly, its only 2m/s difference, correct?

How did you even figure it out? lol

The Mushkin sticks in question are probably more comparable to Corsair Dominator/Dominator GTs as opposed to the value binned XMS3 sticks. That's a big reason people prefer Mushkin to Corsair (lack of tall heatsinks for the same/better performance).

I too was going to go with the cosmos s but after some careful looking decided to go the hafx and have to agree with the mushkin after listening to everyone here its really worth a go. And the amd graphics from all the reviews is too noisy so try nvidia or wait till the aftermarket cooling comes out then it might kick some butt. Ps I cant get mushkin here in Aus either but you can buy it direct which is what i will be doing.

The timming on the memory i gathered at in Milliseconds, so comparing them 9-7 kinda easy lol.. But havnt found anything that backs that up so oh well.

In regards to using Mushkin, The only real reason why i choose it was cause it was available and considering my other choose with Kinston which i loath cosair was the next best thing, As Excalibur as said its very hard to get Mushkin here without it costing an arm and a leg and for the benefit for 2m/s i think i can live with that.

The HAF X is kinda ugly for my tastes, if i where to change it would be the NXZT Phantom in a White but it really comes down the motherboard, having spent 2 days trying to find a case that would fit an MSI big bang i gave up and opted for an Asus level of board as its mainly for gaming. I currently have a HD 5770 and that is relatively noisy as well at 80c lol, i will most likely go for the Nvidia, il be getting the graphics card last to hopefully see as you said an Aftermarket fan on it.

Thing with Nvidia vs AMD, do the programs you use for graphics and encoding support CUDA? Because if they do Nvidia would the smarter choice since it will be faster.

Also if you are buying in Australia you should be able to get a 6990 for ~$750 from PCCASEGEAR. And for $800 you should be able to get MSI GTX570 SLI Twin Frozer II, which will be quiet so you can sleep at night when rendering, and should overclock better than ones with reference coolers.

Also GTX570 SLI + Overclock > 590 + Overclock

Use a majority of stores as not all have what i'm wanting, however the site that you just put has everything and cheaper then what i first added up. So thankyou for that, giving alot more options now especially cases

Glad to help, PCCaseGear is one of the cheapest stores in Aus. Too bad they don't stock Mushkin anymore

Heheh yea i noticed that, first thing i looked for lol.. But overall much cheaper then anywhere else i've tried, its silly but having all new options now is making it much harder to settle..

Build update
