New Build: What Graphics Card for SteamVR?

Hey Guys,

So I'm planning on building a new system for VR, but having a little dilemma over which graphics card would best be suitable for VR, I have been told that the R9 390x wouldn't be near enough to handle VR.... If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the R9 390x out perform a GTX 980 which I have read is very capable in Supporting VR?...just curious what you guys think, and if possible recommend a Graphics Card, or Change this system in anyway to make a suitable setup for VR.

-Maximus VIII Extreme Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 EATX Motherboard
-Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151
-Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Red
-R9 390X DC3 OC Strix 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Keeping my Corsair HX850 PSU to power the above...

Any help would be much appreciated :) Thanks.

To be honest I wouldn't like to say any current generation GPU's are really VR ready. Untill VR is relesed into the wild I would personally hold off choosing anything until games are actually released and the true GPU loads can be assessed.

Both Rift and Vive have a 2160x1200 resolution. bearing in mind that for the best experience you need to be producing above the 90fps limit of the screens. That is a lot of GPU power needed. Yes lower "High end" cards will be able to push the resolution and frames needed at a relatively low detail setting.

Realistically, the best card you can buy is what will be needed. There is a lot of speculation about better SLI/CF support for VR due to each GPU being able to render 1 eye/screen each.
