[font=arial,helvetica,sans-serif][font=trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif]Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about building a new PC, as my old 2008 build is starting to cause me problems and I have a bit of money to spend on one.

Since the reveal of the new CM Storm Stryker, I have feel it would look amazing in my room and fits my needs looks-wise and could fit a decent system in for gaming and to run some quite graphically intense programs.

I was also looking at giving it a red / white / black theme with possibly a Rampage IV Extreme motherboard and some red RAM, with possibly a 3960X and a custom water cool set up. I am indifferent in the video card department between AMD and Nvidia and am not sure what to pick, although I'm leaning toward a 7970. :/

Any suggestions on ideas for this I would be very grateful as I am a Newbie on here and in building PC's as I've only build one before, with the help of a friend.

Well unless your video rendering etc. the first thing people will tell you is get rid of the 3960x and go for something like a 3570K with a Z77 MoBo.

i agree the CM storm stryker looks pretty awesome, i still need to watch tom's video on it

i can't comment on watercooling as never tried it myself. Anyway i look forward to seeing what you end up with

Yeh, there's very little point spending the extra 300 quid on a 3960x over a 3930k as well.

Save the money there and you'll have more to spend on watercooling

Thanks for that, I was considering it, I have a tendency to buy the most expensive things so the price of the 3960X drew my eye. However I'm sure the 3930k would do just fine.

And Willsk, I know, I cant wait for the modding guide and what he comes up with for this case.

What kind of memory would be best do you think ?

What are you using the computer for? thats kind of vital...

Yeah this is very important because the misconception is always the more expensive the better and although to a degree that is correct in many cases you can waste hundreds of pounds on something that will give you no real world advantage, particularly in gaming

the extreme edition processors and the 3990ks even only really come into play when we start rendering or running other such processor intensive programmes

Edit: on another note it's worth taking into consideration that the so called "cheaper" processors can actually end up on par with the more expensive ones when overclocked and especially if you plan on watercooling you should have a nice amount of room to do so

Exactly, and also regarding RAM, you could comfortably run a gaming system off even 4gb of RAM. You should be going with 8gb due to current prices and it does perform a little better, but there's not really any difference between 6gb and 8gb in gaming, and because of how windows utilises RAM, there's then no difference in gaming between 8gb and 64gb. The only way that would prove effective is while rendering, or RAM caching. So basically 8gb max unless you're rendering, in which case go for 16gb

I too would recommend the 3930k over the 3960x. While both are pretty excessive for gaming, if you just want to do a bit of Willy waving the the '30K will blow the doors of pretty much anything so I've heard, and the '60X is only marginally better, but does not justify it's price tag...

Thanks everyone,

Im going to be playing a few games on the proposed rig, with quite a bit of rendering and some intensive programs such as XRD phase identification.

I have been looking at some monitors, and really like a 30inch Hazro 2560x1600 monitor, which would have the resolution I want, and its quite a good price, what are the best monitors out thee in your opinion ?
