New build help?

Keyrings

New member
Some probably recognise me from the Discord, but anyway: I'm planning a new rig and have a parts list I like but looking for a few things;
- Any tips/improvements,
- Monitor recomendations,
- Fan recomendations
- General thoughts.

Please bear in mind this is for gaming/streaming with a £2000 budget and a black and white theme - but hopefully as cheap as possible :D

You have a £2000 budget but only a 1060? And it's a expensive 1060.

Move the CPU platform to ryzen and move the 1060 to a 1070/180 if you are lucky

Agreed. At that budget I'd shoot for a 1070 or higher.

For streaming, Ryzen 7 is king with its 8c/16t goodness. With that cooler you'd probably be able to OC to 4GHz. At that point Ryzen is more than adequate for gaming. Your framerate will be slightly lower compared to Intel, but it won't be noticeable unless you're gaming on a monitor with a really high refresh rate.

You'd also have a clear upgrade path with Ryzen, since AMD will keep socket AM4 around until at least 2021. If you buy a good motherboard now, chances are you'll be able to keep it for up to 6 years if you upgrade your CPU every 2~3 years.

Other than that your parts list looks good. 32GB of RAM might not be necessary, even for streaming. 16GB should get the job done. Just get higher speed (3000MHz+) if you do switch to Ryzen. But it's up to you.

£2000 for the whole setup so yeh. I'd be happy to drop some specs in order for a good monitor (or two)

Any idea what resolution you want e.g. 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440p?. As Average said 16gb of ram should be enough. I would get a 1070 over the 1060 though bud

No point in getting a wireless headphone. Because you don't have Bluetooth...

Just get a gaming headset and plug it in. Don't waste good cans with wireless it defeats the point. Just my 2 cents.

100% I agree.

So the best thing to do is reduce the RAM to 16GB (Ryzen compatible and high speed) and move over to the Ryzen 7 (way better for streaming) and make sure your motherboard is compatible too.

Then change the 1060 to a 1070 and avoid the wireless earphones.

Has it been proven it's better for streaming vs a 8700k? It was for the 7700k but I haven't seen anyone test it with 8700k.

That's a good question - I am not sure but as Average pointed out he can still upgrade down the line with Ryzen and use the money saved on the CPU + Mobo on the 1070

My main concern is giving the OP accurate information and we don't persuade him with maybe's. I'll have a look around and see if i can find anything

pretty good video. Shows it's game dependent for streaming quality.

I agree. Helping the OP make an informed decision when he's buying his PC is obviously the whole point of this thread.

As far as what I said goes, I think that the 8700k and Ryzen 7 will both be able to handle streaming just fine. The Intel might even be (slightly) better, but the reason I recommended Ryzen is because it's cheaper.

With the money he'd save by choosing Ryzen, he'd be able to stretch to a GTX 1070. Personally I'd say a Ryzen 7 1700 + GTX 1070 would be a better choice than an 8700k + GTX 1060. Ryzen is not quite as powerful in gaming workloads compared to Intel, but I'd say that with a Ryzen + 1070 build he'd get better framerates at roughly the same price.

But at the end of the day, both will be able to handle his needs just fine, so it's really up to Keyrings. I'm sure he'll love both configurations. So if OP feels more comfortable going with Intel, I'd say go for it.

Yes I do agree with you too. Thanks for the information NBD but I still hold my opinion of going with Ryzen 7 + 1070.

The extra GPU performance will excel at streaming.

Depending on your rolls in the silicon lottery, 8700k can edge a 8/16 ryzen in productive tasks or streaming, and in gaming Intel is just better or equal across the board. In the case of streaming it's good to note that with uncapped framerate 8700k often runs at higher FPS, thus slightly nibbling away resources from encoding - capping the game fps works to alleviate that if it's important.

But the differences aren't that significant in my opinion. For 144Hz gaming I'd go Intel, otherwise Ryzen. Oh and 32Gb of ram is probably useless - you either have enough RAM or don't, and having extra doesn't improve your performance. 16Gb basically never runs out if all you do is game.

If I had £2000: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Vqn8LD though I threw that together quite quickly. Mousepad would be QcK+ from Steelseries.

I agree with everyone else in that a 1060 is kinda light for a $2000 gaming build. Honestly you could drop down to a R5 1600x and save $200 on your CPU then get a 1080. A 1600x @ 4GHz paired with a 1080 will easily outperform a 8700K and 1060. A 1600x paired with an Asus X370 Prime motherboard would save you about $250. If you want to stick with Intel then I'd at least drop down to the 8600K. That'll save you $120 and you could move up to a 1070 easier.

Id also go with the Corsair TX750M instead of the RX550. A little extra headroom and it's a superb power supply for about the same price.

For gaming, the GPU is what you need to put the largest chunk of your money into as that's what is going to determine how well your rig performs.

That's ok. I just wanted to give some evidence and something the OP could read into himself so he can make a better decision.
