New Build Advice Needed

Hey guys

Long time reader but only just joined.

I built my last pc 2 years ago and its received no upgrades since then, the time is coming up for an upgrade.

I havent been in the loop for these 2 years on hardware so not sure whats new / worth going for and so need advice on the technologies and parts to be looking at. this will be my 5th personal build so im not a noob at this.

Budget is somewhere around 2-3k probably and I am also considering replacing my dual monitors as they are 4-5 years old now (24" samsungs)

The PC is used for gaming (I want the best for this to get every advantages) and also for regular usage and movies etc etc.

Current spec so peoplke get an idea of where i am:

i7 920 D0 at 4.2ghz watercooled on a triple rad

CM Cosmos (Case is to big, need to downsize)

5850 Ati card

6gb dominator ram

asus p6t

40gb intel ssd (very old)

The PC was built when i7 first came out and so i was limited on hardware choices, I can provide any other info needed.

Looking for a smaller build with a lot more power and am a fan of overkill so please dont limit it around the basics needed to play games. Budget is flexible but im not totally sure how much I can commit at the moment.

With a pretty big budget like that, you'd be looking at either a 3930k Sandybridge-E on something like a Rampage IV Extreme or a 3770k Ivybridge, on a Z77 motherboard. The ASUS P8Z77 Deluxe is one of the best around at the moment.

Graphics wise you're looking at either 7970s or GTX 670s/680s. If you're a fan of overkilling may as well go for CrossfireX/SLI.

Solid State wise - Avoid OCZ at all costs, other than that you're good

Yes i want to stay on water. i only plan to keep my pump and perhaps my rad if a triple fits the new case, otherwise all parts will be ebayed

I do want to replace the monitors as they are fading now, but i dont want to compromise components just to get hold of some displays so im flexible there, ill look into the parts. and as said im keeping water cooling

Nice build but I would suggest going with the I7-3930K or switching to IB and getting an I7-3770K with the Z77 mobo instead of the I7-3820.

yea just ran it past a friend who said go IB, it uses dual channel ram though does that not make for inferior performance to quad?

No, all of the analysis I have seen has not shown much improvement between the two. Quad channel kits are just two sets of duel channel packaged together.

There a several good z77 boards out now. ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE, sabertooth Z77, G1 Sniper 3 or wait for the new ROG z77 Maximus board to come out,

They are great for hardcore over clocking and gaming. However, the majority of people will not really use all of the functionality of the board. Most people buy it for the ROG name and the looks. Not sure when the Asus ROG Maximus 5 Extreme Z77 will be released.

I'd say go for a 3930k and a Rampage. Longer lasting platform. And if you have the budget, go for GTX 670 in SLI. One of them can clock close to a 7970, and SLI = dream.

ok guys so im decided on these parts. Im carrying over the cpu block and rad from my current build. Im going to wait for the Rampage board, dont know nvidia or ati for card and which ones, i never sli because id rather have a better single card. any comments on those parts and help with the card

Looks good overall, could consider i7-3770 instead of 3770K. PSU I would suggest Corsair Pro Series Gold AX850 or AX750 for single graphics. Nvidia or ATI, both are great but that's your call, check out the rewiews/benchmarks.

whats the difference between the normal and the K? i just chose it as it cost more (assumed better).

Power supply, any specific reason for changing?

Graphics im still going to research as its always the most expensive part.
