Hi everyone, really good looking forum you guys got here, I've been lurking around for quite some time and finally registered.

I'm planning to build a new machine and wanted your advice on it.
My first blueprint is as follows:

Case: Corsair Obsidian 900D / Coolermaster HAF X
PSU: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10, 1000W

CPU: Intel i7 4770 "Haswell"
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced C1
Mainboard: ?
RAM: G.Skill DIMM 16 GB DDR3-2133 Quad-Kit


GPU: ?
Storage: Western Digital WD10JPVT 1 TB
(SSD: ?)

1000 watts is monster overkill. 760 would be more than enough.

Mainboard any will do msi gaming is a nice choice.

I would go for one the matches your colour scheme..

Gpu 780 if you're going nvidia or 7970 (or two) for amd

Samsung 810 pro 128 or 256 depending on the amount of programs you have installed.
 
First of all, welcome to the forums dude, its a lovely place once you get used to it.

1. Do you really need a 900D? I'd go for a full tower but not one that costs more than the cpu. I'd go for something else, its all down to personal preference with this.

2. Do you really need 1000W? I'd go for a good brand like corsair or nzxt, and tbf 750/850w unit is enough for anything you want to throw at it, depends on your plans for this rig in the future tbh.

3. make sure to get the 4770K not the 4770, price difference is minimal and its a better overclocker, also is more desirable if you wish to sell it further on in the future.

4. if you're getting a 900D, it's stupid to use an aircooler, either save on other components and go full custom loop or atleast get an AIO like the H100i or H110.

5. mainboard.....what colour scheme are you going with? and whats the budget for it?

6. what is the pc's primary use going to be? 16gb is a lot. 8gb is enough for any gaming pc and the extra cash could go for the custom loop.

7. It seems like you're building a high end pc so you should go for a high end gpu, I'd go for a 7970/ 770/ 780, depends on which brand you prefer and the res you'll be gaming at.

8. you cant argue with storage so I'll skip that, for ssd I'd go with something larger than 120gb, something like the intel 520, samsung 840 pro will serve you well. (try to avoid ocz on this one)

Yeah seems like you're right on the fact that 1000W are a real overkill.
I wasn't sure on the Corsair 900D myself, but I wanted to stick with air cooling.
Is there any other high quality case you could recommend beside my second choice (Coolermaster HAF X) ?

Considering the intended work field: Besides gaming, the PC is going to be used for audio editing, video rendering and recording which often results in a LOT of multitasking. Therefore the 16GB.

With your advices in mind, I updated the specs as follows:

Case: Coolermaster HAF X (?)
PSU: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 750W or Corsair AX760i ; To be honest, I never heard of NZXT.

CPU: Intel i7 4770K "Haswell"
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced C1

Mainboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER
RAM: G.Skill DIMM 16 GB DDR3-2133 Quad-Kit

GPU: MSI GTX760 OC Twin Frozr

Storage: Western Digital WD10JPVT 1 TB

Seems like the SSD would have to wait a little bit longer, as this would cap my budget. What do you think?
 
cases: how about the nzxt phantom 630 or phantom 820, nzxt switch 810, corsair 540, corsair 600t, corsair 650D or corsair c70. all of these are nice cases, just find one that you like and that fits your budget.

as for cpu cooler, I'd still go for a closed loop over an air cooler, easier to work with and looks cleaner.

I'm not sure about the 760, can you stretch it to a 770?

as for ssd, that can wait, I only bought my ssd a couple years after I finished my rig, it is easily upgradable although now that I use one I can say it affects the system the most everything feels so snappy.
 
Is there a specific closed loop you can recommend? As for the GPU: I guess I'm trying to save some bucks on this end ^^
 
Guy obviously likes the looks of the 900D, what about throwing an mATX build in a 350D into the loop?

GPU I'd say GTX760 or 770 or the equivalent AMD ones (think it is 7950 and 7970)

PSU - Nothing wrong with the AX series from Corsair, 760 should be more than enough.

Would recommend an SSD any day, not been able to get one in my system so far but seen the difference they make too, it's unreal when it comes to day-to-day use.

change the cooler to an h100i, just for quiteness. also add either noctua fans if you can afford them or sp120 QE, the stock fans on AIO coolers are stupidly loud.
i don't even know if it makes sense to get a gaming grade MSI board, it's honestly a waste of money with a locked cpu. some h87 board should be enough.
if you edit a lot get a 300+ GB SSD
i'd really like to see an matx render build.
 
No PC built at this current time with a reasonable budget should use a HDD as the OS drive. Get an SSD, personally I use the Samsung 840 pro.

You didn't comment on whether you would be overclocking?

I wouldn't be using an SSD for storing/rending files, that is a lot of read/write to it and it will degrade pretty quick.

ssd for is and programs amd then a storage drive for files.

wot. he is supposed to use the SSD to speed up the rendering, afaik every moviemaker uses ssds for that.

The ssd would speed up rendering but the rendering would degrade the memory of the ssd making slower, a data 3 mechanical drive will do around 100 MB/s which is more than enough.

it's not like the memory will be degraded within 2 weeks and a normal hdd will die after 5 years as well. if you are afraid of degraded memory on an ssd you probably shouldn't use one at all.

That's true but my pal has a ssd he writes to it loads and its already slowing after about 6 months.
 
You convinced me on the SSD, at least for the OS.

Here is my updated build:

Mainboard: MSI Z87 GD65
RAM: G.Skill Trident X F3-2400C10D-16GTX

GPU: MSI GTX760 OC Twin Frozr

Storage: Western Digital WD10JPVT 1 TB and Samsung 840 Pro series
 
does it really have to be the coolermaster haf x? i don't really like the internal layout and the h110 might not fit in there
maybe switch it up to the fractal design r4 or arc r2 and the h100i
 
Hmmm havent thought of this :huh:

However I was able to get my hands on the HAF X because my friend got it and it really really appeals to me.

What do you think of the Thermaltake GT10 Cases?

Or the Corsair Carbide Air 540?

NZXT Phantom 820, Corsair Carbide Air 540 and Coolermaster HAF X
