Negative temp reading on speedfan

Overclocked my Q6600 go stepping today and noticed that every now and then speedfan is giving negative temperature readings for the CPU and system. The lastest gives CPU -30 and system -40 (fluctuates a bit).

I tried rebooting and it still gave these readings - so i left the pc off for half an hour and now its back to normal. The CPU sits at 37 to 38 C idle and 50 c at 100% load running the 64 bit prime 95 app. The system temp rarely moves 1 degree either side of 35 C.

Is it normal to get these negative readings once in a while (especially after 100% load for a few hours) or do i have a problem that needs addressing?

Thanks for any help!

It may be a bug in speedfan itself, have you tried a different version? I know that some of the newer 45nm CPUs suffer from dodgy temp sensors, though I've never heard of it in a q6600. If it's still testing OK and working fine i'd be inclined to just leave it.

The BIOS temp readings are normal and other software has never shown this. After reading other topics and those on a few other sites it seems that if the problem persists i should try remounting my cooler. I shall take your advice and see how it goes - if the problem persists i'll try a cooler remount - thanks for a speedy response!

No cooler remount needed for this, you can't just jump from load temp (60*C?) to -40*C, so it has to be a software bug / glitch.

Speedfan is buggy. It once told me that one of my temps was like 27,000C or something like that.
