Need some SB vs IB advice

Sitting in my Maximus V gene I have a 2600k that wasn't exactly top prize in the silicon lottery. I have the chance to change my chip with minimal costs. I do like to overclock and I want to keep the future in mind.
So here are my options:
1. Get a 2500k or 3570k and make a small profit.
2. Stick with what I have.
3. Spend a small amount for a 3770k.

So there are two basic questions: SB vs IB and i5 vs i7.

SB vs IB: Don't like the IBs running hotter, but will tolerate it, if they are better for future use. Is something like pci-e 3.0 something to take into account or will these chips be dead by the time this becomes relevant? (My cpu is underwater so I won't be battling the heat unarmed.)

i5 vs i7: To my knowledge, I'm not really doing much that benefits from HT, but will HT be more useful in the future? Or is i5 vs i7 more than just a question of having HT? If I just lose HT and there are no consequences in the long term, I don't see downgrading to i5 to get the short term benefits of extra cash to use on other rig updates as a bad idea.

There is a part of me that just wants a new chip, just for the chance of a new go in the lottery.
(yes, I know that I shouldn't count on getting a better chip, but still)

A SB to IB upgrade is usually a foolish idea, but seeing as the 3770k is the only option that actually costs me money and I have a Z77 board, I think it changes things a bit.
So any thoughts on what I should get or do I need someone to knock some sense into me for even considering a new chip?

Do it. Ivy is only a little faster than Sandy but its still faster. It wouldn't be worth it at full price but if you can get a smoking deal on a 3770K, why not go for it. Yeah it might be a little overkill but its always better to have more CPU horsepower than you need. ;)

And the "new toy" factor is certainly worth something too. We do this hobby for fun so there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a new toy to play with. If you've got the cash I see nothing at all wrong with going from a 2600K to a 3770K especially if the 2600 isn't a very good overclocked.

Seems like we think alike  so 3770K doesn't sound to insane, but what does 2600k->3570k sound like? This isn't a question of how much I want to spend on this hobby, but more about how much this would delay getting other parts that are on my tobuy list. I think any new chip, even a i3, would have the "new toy" effect for me. (okey, maybe not an i3) So there has to be atleast some logic in getting a 3770K instead of the other options, even though rational thinking isn't my strong point when it comes to things like this

Well I think a 3570K would be about a side grade. Youd get a little better IPC but that Hyperthreading could come in handy from time to time. I think it would be 3770K or nothing if it were me.

When talking about new chips, I thought sandy was still a valid option (having less heat with a small performance loss), but from your posts it sounds like if we are talking about a new chip (no second hand options) then it should be ivy without a doubt. Hate to admit, but wasn't necessarily obvious in my mind at first.

Seeing as the 3570k is a sidegrade and not a downgrade, I see it as a viable option, though I am leaning more towards the 3770K atm, but I'll have to see what the price difference means for the rest of my plans.

Thank you for the input guys. I think I needed a bit of validation for my plans and the fact that neither of the ivy options is a downgrade, in my mind makes this just a question of 3570k vs 3770k, which simplifies things.

I think you should always try to buy as much horsepower as you can afford. You never hear anybody say "man my computer is too fast. Wish I'd bought cheaper parts". ;)

True  but if I go with a i5, I can buy 2x690s and when some one says that I'm using my money mindlessly, I can answer "No, I got the 3570k instead of the 3770K!" ;) But in all seriousness, like I said, I am leaning towards the 3770K. In reality the extra money from going with the i5 would probably be spent partly at a bar, so going with the i7, I would atleast remember what I spent it on.

2600k->3570k doesn't make any sense at all, unless you care about some serious mem clocking, imho.

2600k->3770k makes some sense, especially if you didn't have a good 2600k in the first place. Because if you did (those 5GHz@<1.4v monsters) you'd better stick with it.

im geussing you were joking about the 690's?

Yes, it was a poor attempt at a joke. Personally I prefer single-gpu cards so no worries about me getting even one. I like to think of myself as a reasonable person with the occasional want for abit of overkill compaired to my needs.
Its like I'm at a crossroad and you guys are all pushing me in the same direction, yet I hesitate, so I'll stop resisting and go with the 3770K :)
