Sitting in my Maximus V gene I have a 2600k that wasn't exactly top prize in the silicon lottery. I have the chance to change my chip with minimal costs. I do like to overclock and I want to keep the future in mind.
So here are my options:
1. Get a 2500k or 3570k and make a small profit.
2. Stick with what I have.
3. Spend a small amount for a 3770k.
So there are two basic questions: SB vs IB and i5 vs i7.
SB vs IB: Don't like the IBs running hotter, but will tolerate it, if they are better for future use. Is something like pci-e 3.0 something to take into account or will these chips be dead by the time this becomes relevant? (My cpu is underwater so I won't be battling the heat unarmed.)
i5 vs i7: To my knowledge, I'm not really doing much that benefits from HT, but will HT be more useful in the future? Or is i5 vs i7 more than just a question of having HT? If I just lose HT and there are no consequences in the long term, I don't see downgrading to i5 to get the short term benefits of extra cash to use on other rig updates as a bad idea.
There is a part of me that just wants a new chip, just for the chance of a new go in the lottery.
(yes, I know that I shouldn't count on getting a better chip, but still)
A SB to IB upgrade is usually a foolish idea, but seeing as the 3770k is the only option that actually costs me money and I have a Z77 board, I think it changes things a bit.
So any thoughts on what I should get or do I need someone to knock some sense into me for even considering a new chip?
