Recently built a new system and for about two weeks it has been running absolutely fine.
However when i was on it yesterday playing Tropico 4 it suddenly stops working.
I got to turn it on agian thinking it has just crashed or somthing and it wont turn on.
There is a light on the motherboard that shows it is getting power it just wont turn on.
When i do press the on button there is a sound that comes from the fans as though they are going to start up.

Does any one have any ideas what has happened?

Thanks for your time, Blarg

Would be nice to know, what kind of system specifications mate ? :)
Just post the whole system spec here !

BTW what sound , spinning up sound ?

Yeah sorry.

Zotac h77 mini itx wifi a mobo
Intel 15-3450 3.1ghz with stock cooler
VTX3d low profile 7750
32gb msata drive
120gb sandisk extreme drive
400w ezcool tfx psu
8gb 1333mhz kingston ram

And the sound is a kind of *dump* sound like the motors in the fan are about to start up but then stip, the fans dont actually spin.

Nothing caught in the fans that i can see, both being powered from the motherboard.

Yeah i think the BIOS is up to date, only downloaded the drivers 2 weeks ago.

Would the fans not being able to spin up stop the computer from working?

And as for resetting the CMOS, as the computer wont turn on i would have to do this through shorting the jumper? I also havent changed any of the settings.

There should be instructions to clear the CMOS in your motherboard manual? Probably?

Basically, the fans not running shouldn't stop the computer from working but it seems like a power issue and that'll let you know if it's a problem with the power coming from your power supply, or the power running through the board. Well, it'll get us one step closer to working out the issue, anyway.

PSU.. voltage drop out.. almost sounds like the BIOS boot-loop. upon power to POST
sounds like some device is errored out.. disconnect any and all unnecessary USB
devices, disconnect opti drives if installed. retest. is that 2 or four slot RAM?

Yeah found that the CMOS headers had a convenient little jumper on them, so tried that. Still nothing.

I will try unplugging everything when i get back home today. It is 2 slot RAM that i am using (there are only two slots on the motherboard.)

I am convincing myself more and more that it is a PSU fault and i am quite tempted to just buy a new one (better quality).

There is a computer shop local to me that does a repair diagnostics service for £10. Would this be worth it?

EDIT: Thanks for all the ideas and input so far, really appreciate it.

Save yourself a tenner and run checks for obvious things first. Ideally, if you had another motherboard and PSU you could probably find out exactly what it is but for now, try running the fans off the PSU and see what happens, I reckon.

unfortunatley I don't have any spare parts (at uni at the moment) I could use one of my flat mates components from there computer (they have offered) but I really wouldn't want to break them.

Well, you could use their PSU. No real danger there. It should have all the protection it needs to keep it safe under any circumstances. Definitely don't use your PSU with their board, though!
