Hi people i'm new here and I've joined the forums to ask for some help with my build I have just got myself this spec.

6700k
8gb ddr 3ghz(will be 24gb come payday gonna add a 16gb kit)
asus maximus hero VIII
Evga 980ti sc
pc power and cooling silencer 910w psu

I can hit 4.6ghz just fine anything after is unstable and crashes when I stress test
i'm not even remotely a skilled overclocker so i'm pretty sure it's down to inexperience.
Is there anyone with a maximus VIII that can help me out i'd be mega grateful and would pay in cookies. :D

Youll need to give us a lot more info than that fella.

Bios screenshots - cpu-z screenshots etc.

If you are on 'auto' volts then the learning curve is going to be pretty steep so be ready.

If you are running auto volts, follow this guide (basics are all there) and youll need to start again from scratch

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/gigabyte_z77_overclocking_guide/1

I'll check that out cheers I have a lot to learn but i'm willing to put the effort in.

Have you watched TTL's guide to OC?
Also don't think that board is triple channel optimised (only mentions dual channel XMP), I don't know why you would need more than 16gb plus would look a little unbalanced having 3 out of its 4 slots populated. Then you get ram mis-matchment ... thats just general OCD more than anything.

Not seen a Pcpac PSU in a build in a while if any while ive been active here for a short time, good review they got though :)

What case is this PC going in??

Im assuming you will be doing a build log... well i hope at least.

Ive only taken a 4770k up to 4.4 but that was for a friend and i used TTL's vids for guides found finding the min voltage it worked at on stock and working up was most successful for getting the lowest volts for me. Ram timings is where i struggled. But some heavy OC'ers on here.

Here's where i'm up to i can set cpu voltage it's other voltages that confused the hell out of me my last cpu was a 3770k i was fine with oc on that z170 seems trickier to me so i'm back on stock but with my ram on it's xmp setting of 3ghz cas 15 i did check toms vid out a lot of it made perfect sense but there's still some aspects of it i struggle with i'm not very experienced with overclocking Sorry i've only just got back to you fellas now i've been working a lot.

Ok here's where i'm at i can get to 4.6 with no issues at all but going higher the cpu seems to show high voltage in cpuz even though i've set lower in bios it's 1.4v i'm wondering if it's giving false readings i'm almost sure my cpu can possibly handle 4.8ghz but i don't wanna kill the thing.
cpuz reads 1.424 idle and hits 1.488 when i start an aida64 stress test so i immediately stop it i'll back down to 4.6 for now anyone have any ideas?

Edit: i'm now on 4.7ghz @1.4v at load it hits 1.408v temps not going over 66 degrees and seems stable i had to lower LLC because it was taking me way past the vcore i set in the bios it's set at level 6 now is there any other voltages that might benefit a slight bump up as i aim for the ultimate goal of 4.8ghz?
