Hi i am looking to build a new rig as my old comp after 5 years is just to slow i am mainly play wow and with the cata expansion release my ancient graphics card is just to slow and is a all in one so cant replace it so i decided to save up and build a new one and i am very out of the loop on pc but i want to run on the highest settings and i do 10 and 25 man end game raid which rapes your fps i have to turn every effect off on mine at the mo to riad which sucks.

So i am looking for a card that will let me play wow at max settings and give me a good frame rate any good advice i am looking to fist of buy one card the add a second on when the prices come down a little and what type of psu would be best to accommodate all this.

i was thinking along the lines of for the rest of the build

i7 950

asus rampage gene or extreme

mus or dom ram 6gb

graphics ?????????

case ??????

Around 3/4 years ago I built 2 identical pcs which would play WOW as it's highest demand.

E6850

4g

8600GT

Abit P43

(no overclock, cos I'm 6000 miles away)

Which played it at 50 million fps on 22" monitor. Max res, all max settings.

Subequently the gfxcards were replaced with 9600 & 9800 respectively. (I did say it'd be a waste of time for what they want - but what can you do)

But there have been updates to the game, recently especially with this Cataclysm thing, afaik the pcs are handling it still, probably around 40 million fps tho

In fairness, it isn't/wasn't the most demanding of games. I would imagine as far as newer cards are concerned, graphics wize, anything from a 5770 and above would do fine. There's no physx in Cataclysm afaik.

I would wait for someone who still plays WOW on the forum to throw in their 2cents, especially regarding the latest update.

yea ur right it did not used to need a high end graphics card when u only rp or quest but when u raid its a different story i used to max out the settings on this comp 4-5 years ago

I'm more familiar with the nvidia side, 460 should be fairly good enough, a 470 is more then enough i'll say. If you really wanna be future proof 570

I too play wow but not a in a guild or anything so i can't tell the exact numbers. But in dungeons i get about 70-90fps and it dips to 40 when in heavy fights.

GTX 470 with all the settings enabled with dx11 on.

as for PSU i would look into getting a SILVERSTONE ST75F-P 750 which gives you room for upgrading and overclocking.

Maybe so but plenty are using the 570 on WoW.

Supported or not.

Look at EVGa's forums... just google it.

As WoW is quite CPU dependant and your suggesting a I7 -950 with a 570 you shouldn't have issues.

People are reporting 36 FPS + in raids etc...

Ty for you help tony i guess if a 5 man dips to 40 fps a 10 or 25 man would prob drop to around 15-25 fps during a heavy fight with all the extra ppl and spell detail.

thanks i spoke to blizz they said the max they support is a 4 core cpu so that is why i chose the 950 on the card front maby the blizz site needs some updating with all the new cards i just dont want to lay out on a card and find it was not the right choice if u know what i mean.

I've not understood this for a while.

PCs run outstanding whilst you mess about doing PvE, then as soon as 5,000 players enter your screen your fps drops to 1.

I'm beta'ing Rift atm, and as a tool I use the G15's lcd display to show what the hardware is doing. Checking cpu use, memory leaks and so on.

During instances the fps drops, as it does on all online games, and the cpu (qx9650 @ 3.5g atm), doesn't go over 55% across all cores. Memory @ 50-60% of 4g. And the graphics card is too special and overclocked to worry about.

So what the fudge is hammering the framerate ? Imo it's more connection based - not speed of your (our) connection, but how the translation of all the player's locations and actions are being processed server side then relayed to your (our) clients.

I mean the pc I'm using for the game plays the most demanding of games at extremely high fps. And yet an Aion engine game is falling down due to players on the screen.

Other players actions are-not calculated on the client pcs. The client pcs do very little when you look at server related games. And yet I do hear players insisting that they're going to upgrade to an i7 pc because of it.

Sorry for the OT.

yeah but 40 is like for couple seconds, it averages 70ish fps and rooms and whatnot it around 150fps?

AFIAK there isn't a card that 'best' optimized for wow. Any newer cards should be able to play the game okay

But 10-25 man could be a internet issue. having all those details could be increasing your ping more then your actually losing fps

From what i have heard from ppl who play on multiple servers it seams if you play on one with a high population and most of ppl are online the servers can struggle there for giving bad lag and fps that should not affect me as mine is nice and quiet yay i expect some low fps in busy citys or on patch days it can also drop a bit i have found but usually clears up the next day. Also i don't know if this affects you but i used to get a crappy upload but my isp just upgraded it which is nice so if you are playing and chating on ts or vent or mumble and have some one els uploading to facebook u could use all ur upload therefore create lag

i got cable on a 20mb down and 2mb up when i test it on speed test it say i got a A rated conection so hope the fault is not there

so from what every one is saying bottom line is nvid 460 or above or amd 6870 or above ty for all you info.

It would be nice to hear from some ppl using the amd cards just to have there side of the story

Just to put one thing aside, the gaming pc I use just does gaming. It's a win7 optimized install on an ssd that doesn't do anything but play games. That's what the mac's for

But seriously, on the same subject, I notice whilst hosting a server that if I spawned a load of boss mobs for a small number of players that when they kill more and more of them (on a game that drops items on the floor) the lag based on the items laying on the floor gets hurrendous. Leading me to further think that it's the server conveying item/player info - just info in general - to the player's clients. That would be uplink on the client side causing a problem.

Isn't that just tessellation and texturing, in this instance I would assume more ram on your graphics card would help? Interesting to see how 6970 would stack up against a 570 in WoW, since it does have 2gb of ram and optimized for tessellation.

Is there any tessellation in WoW? I was under the impression that the engine currently doesn't use any tessellation effects.
