Need more air cooling? Look no further....

The Inq reports:

WHILE looking at some MSI motherboards here at Linuxworld I couldn't help but notice a big chunk of shiny copper.

It seemed to attract all vision to it, and had little pipes which might cause one to ponder if it's water cooled. I'm told MSI designed this heat pipe, and has someone else build it for them, so they can plunk it down and cool some Intel chip.

If you like quieter computers, you'll appreciate anything that helps reduce the need for huge, noisy fans.

MSI will be coming out with a smaller version for the Opterons, as they use less power and produce less heat.

Hmmm... I always though the huge fans were less noisy 8)

It does look interesting though, similar in design to what you might find in a modern notebook/ lappy.

It is the inq, what you expect?!

*Attaches Tornado *

Any info on the height of that, looks like in could cause problems with ram/mobo components.

No info as yet - just a pre-release info with a pic for now.

I dont understand putting the fan there, if the heatpipes take the heat away to that lump of copper?

IMO those copper fins look too close together to get good airflow through them.

I agree, I don't quite understand the design there...

I assume that there will either be additional airflow over the main fins, or it is to be passively cooled, and that fan is to just keep the slab cool. A bit odd though.

If you are refering to the copper lump fins, the very small ones, then I believe it would be more of a case of getting largest surface area possible, rather than the most air flow over them.

Forgive me if ive gone well wide of the mark though..

To cool the suronding area is what i have heared it to be for. Bit like the fan on the Gigabite water cooling thing.

Look LGA 775 format to me.

Surly must fit new aged bords, wether part of that hangs out the back or is over say moffsets with a fan

Look forward to a Opty one as i'm now going that way
