need help with disk usage

Hi!

I have Intel 180 GB ssd as my primary disk and after every format and i have 167 GB disk space free. Disk usage is normal after fresh OS instalation but month or two after fresh OS installation i am noticing some 20-30 GB disk space is always missing.

So 122 GB used space+17.3 GB free space is 139.3 GB not 167 GB. Can anyone help me find out what is "eating" 27 Gigs of my disk space

How much ram you got?

Sounds like a page file + hibernation image to me.

It's actually 149.3GB. After format/decimal conversion to GB you are left with 167GB. That is accurate. It's then saying you have 17.3GB free.. meaning you should be using 149.3GB. Which looking at the pics is not accurate. I have never encountered this issue before.. i am going to assume it's bugged. Should update PC to see if it helps. Also check in disk management. The C drive will have a automatic partition for system reserve. It could be taking up quite a bit of space. Although iirc it would effect the total usable GB of 167. Worth checking though to make sure.

You should run disk cleanup(the advanced option if it appears) and see if any restore points have been created and restored. Should also see if virtual memory is enabled for the OS. If it is completely remove it and move it to a HDD. SSDs do not need it as it will overwrite them. It should be equal to the amount of ram you have so it will give you back that space. Also turning windows features off(such as games) can restore space as well. Almost forgot deleting a page file and moving it to a HDD gets an immense amount back too.

On a side note. I have done the above for my SSD and i regained about 30GB worth of space from those alone. Makes a difference! I've done the above to many PCs and results are consistent. Although With Windows 8 i'm unsure if thats still possible.

16 Gigs of ram is installed.I have disabled virtual memory and now i am having 31.1 Gigs free instead of 17.3GB. I am not using hybernation so still missing 13 Gigs. How and where to see if hybernation file is existing?

No.. i'm saying you have the 167GB its reporting.. that's accurate. But with 17.3GB free storage left.. you would have been using the 149.3GB.. your calculations were just off with 139.3..

Just to clarify.. Removing hibernation(so it doesn't appear in the option) doesn't get space back. You need to delete it. Open CMD as an admin, and type in powercfg -h off.. Then hit enter and restart. Before doing this check the amount of storage you have, than after completing this and restarting, check again to see if anything changes.

Best way is to use something like http://alternativeto.net/software/windirstat/

Then look for a BIG square block on the C drive, this will also show you EXACTLY what is using the space It's excellent

It might be worth checking well deleting your driver store. Only really happens when you install from a network but have a look.

Yeah I usually use space sniffer but same thing

System restore points will also eat up space, you can reduce the amount of space allocated in computer properties.
