Need help on airfow;

Hello all,

I have just built my new my pc, [Pics Below]. But the temps are too hot.

So as i already have a massive 360mm fan i bought ages ago - i can finally fit it now!

But im stuck on which direction the air should be going,

1. Into the case.

2. Out of the case.

My setup will be;

1. Front; 120mm

2. Rear; 120mm

3. CPU atm; Stock intel; Sucks onto the heatsink.

4. Side; 360mm

All help on airflow is very much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Firstly welcome to the forums :wavey:

I would say with that beast bolted onto the side you wont achieve a great deal other than deafen your self with fan noise.

Side fans only tend to disturb the air in the case, then the intake and exhaust fans struggle to achieve what they are there for.

Post some temps up, im guessing your unhappy with your CPU temp?

Also what monitoring program you are currently using.

Edit your sig to include your current spec too, helps us give informed advice without asking loads of questions.

P.s. just a quickie...dont resurrect to many old threads!! you may get your wrists slapped with a wet fish!

Its only 27db & 120CFM i would like to fit it as i spent £45! on it

Temps;

Idle; NEVER lower than 45c

Load; 70c

What CPU are you running and is it overclocked?

If you shove it on a fan controller then it may aid cooling, although all i think will happen is the exhaust wont be able to drag sufficient warm air out. The side fan would push the warm air all round your case.

Also if thats a p4 then those temps aint to much to worry about!

Edit: you could try re applying the thermal paste.

I'm running an E5200, nope not overclocked yet because of temps.

I was thinking of using a fan controller.

So you think it should be an intake?

Cant really comment too much as im not sure of temps on that chip with stock cooling.

Does seem high even when idle.

My E8400 under full load never goes above 40 degrees but thats on water.

What are you using as a temp monitoring program?

Speedfan is normally 10 degrees out and needs to be offset.

If your using the standard pads that came with the cooler then i would consider changing the paste ( only do if you feel you are up to it though )

Personally i would say theres enough air flow already with what you have now.

If your adamant you want the big fan on you go for it mate... i would never tell anyone not to mod a case if you really want to

No need for that big fan on the side, just noise and looks....not favourable?

Tbh, should have just spent £45 on a decent CPU cooler

Yep, i should of got a decent cooler but i got it ages ago when i didn't know as much as i do know [As now i would get a cooler]

I think it'd look good , intake then?

I've got some MX2 so i may also try re-seating.

More i look into this one i rekon its the monitoring program, unless ofc you are in a sauna!

Realtemp works well with the newer batch of Intels.

been googling and theres mention of the diodes that read the temps on some chips not giving true readings.

Also if its the stock cooler make sure those awful pins are located through the board correctly!

Other people with this chip are getting 30idle, yes some on different coolers but are using real and core temp to monitor.

Checked and its in firmly.

Take the cooler off, clean the tim, replace with some MX2, and make sure all 4 pins on the stock heatsink locate PROPERLY when you refit, as they can not quite catch and cause high temps

Other than that sell that fan on ebay and spend the funds on a decent air cool, you will be much better off in the long run matey

I really want to incorporate the fan some how. [Im planning on getting a fan controller.

Have you actually cut a hole for the fan, hard to tell?

What you'll need to do to use that fan is have the front and the rear as an exhaust. The air will be forced onto the motherboard area and then sucked out by the other two fans. However, the air which is being pushed into the case needs to be able to get out fast enough, but with vented 5.25" bay covers and clean wiring then hopefully that shouldn't be a problem

I havn't cut the big hole yet, just drilled, Good idea with the both exhaust, yep - The front is meshed and i also have PCI slot with holes so more can escape that way.

On AchillesFan11, theres 2cm Gap from the actual fan rim.. should i cut up or leave it?

I edited them for you dude to show the pictures, havnt you posted some of them before though?

Just a tip get a file and sandpaper on the cut out to clean it up so its round. The big step round the outside will reduce airflow a far bit btw, as most of the flow comes from the outside of the blades not the inside.

Yeah, as TTL said get sanding the edges down so that the edges of the fan isn't covered by the case.
