Need help choosing good speakers

I currently have the Logitech Z506 5.1 Speaker setup and in short, I hate them. The build quality is crap and the sound isn't as good as I thought it would be. I'm thinking of selling them and getting better speakers a 2.1 setup to be exact as I don't see the need for 5.1. So I need help choosing the right speakers, nothing by Logitech I've had bad experience with them and don't want to bother with them any more.

the corsair ones are pretty good what price are you willing to pay??

Corsair SP2200 £76 average price

also take a look at the sony ones around the same price between £76 and £110 and if your into creative labs they have a great set but expensive £250+..

there's some xonar range speakers which infact will be made by Bose which are the most expensive, bose have the same set on sale now from what ive seen but there £300+..

Do you have a soundcard? What's the budget? What are you using them for? Games? Music?

I have no sound card but I am looking at buying one and my budget is around $120(£76), I'm using them for gaming, music, and movies.

The best quality you'll get for that price will be a second hand amplifier/micro hifi and proper speakers.
You can usually get them on ebay, and for a set of 2 speakers and an amp/hifi, it'll only cost you about £20.

That's the best option for people on a budget.

Then I would definitely recommend a soundcard, something like a Xonar D1 or D2X would be great for speakers if you can stretch that far.

The 2.1 systems listed will do an alright job, but won't be near as good as the monitor speakers.

If you're sure you want to go for something new, I'd recommend something like:

or:

I've always prefered set ups like that to any 2.1 or surround sound alternatives.

One of the best options when you are on a budget are active studio monitors, the same as the Microlab Solo 7c's as mentioned above. They are buy all accounts suposed to be awesome, but give off too much sound to be on your desk right in front of you, they are large speakers. Other makes are Bheringer KRK, Alesis and a whole load more. I have got the Bheringer ms 20's connected to a cheap £30 Xonar DGX and have never been happier,

I agree with James. A lot of 2.1 sets give you booming bass and high tones but loose most mid tones.

Everything sounds so much better on a pair of monitors.

I would save up a little more money and around $200 you have several good options like http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Premium-Powered-Desktop/dp/B000VKEFMS or the ones James linked to.

Do monitors give good bass as well?

SP2500s are good for gaming and music that has a lot of heavy bass. But also cost damn near 250$ so that is over your budget. Active monitors are the best way to go with a decent sound card.
