Need a huge Ethernet cable to run through my house?

I'm currently running a d-link pci network card. Yes I have 5 bars constantly but Another pc is

also on the same network running through wirless. This makes it rather fustrating for me when

gaming/streaming football and what not.

I really want to run a connection through an ethernet cable. The router used to be in my room and

a standard 3m yellow ethernet cable worked fine. I just moved house and I'm wanting to have the

same smooth connection but over a much longer distance. I'm wanting to order 25 to 30 metres of

cable but im not sure what type I should be looking at. I must admit im no good when it comes to

dealing with anything internet related. I used to think all ethernet cable was the same and there

wasn't any lower or higher quality cables. There must be a difference between a 30m ethernet cable

on ebay costing £4.00 and ones costing up to £100. I'm seeing Cat5, Cat6, UTP, STP, RJ45 and im

baffled, what does it all mean?

Sorry if i'm confusing people, i'll put the question's I want answered into much simpler terms...

Will this cable from ebay costing £4.00 work perfectly connecting a single pc to a router?

What do Cat5, Cat6, UTP, STP, RJ45 all mean?

Thankyou in advanced for answering my questions.

the long the cable is, the greater the loss of parity (data-loss) you will get.

even in LAN networks, most cables are boosted at source, or during transit every 10-15metres or so.

Your looking for a CAT5e cable I recently had the same problem you can get it off amazon for about £10 i found a site that does low profile version for £15 great if you wanna run it under the carpet gimme a shout if you want me to look it up

Yes please, a link would be great. how far is your pc away from the router? Also what do you use the internet for, do you stream tv and game? I'm finding it hard to join games on gta 4 and fifa 11 is impossible to play, crysis 2 just feels really wierd and I get disconnected all the time. I was streaming United vs Chelsea today and it would lag up for 10 minute periods. It seemed ok when I was running it in a low resolution. I have 5 bars on my PCI Adapter and my internet connection is at around 5mb, twice as fast as my old house. I thought it was strange so I took it downstairs and plugged it into the ethernet port and it was perfect.

Thankyou in advanced for answering my questions.

The different cables will be certified for speeds. Traditionally Cat5 is rated for 10/100 although it can do gigabit with shorter runs. Cat5e is rated for 10/100/1000 same as Cat6. The 5 and 6 are the amount of twists in cable pairs inside the sheath. Cat6 will have more twisting vs cat5, but I couldn't tell you without looking how many twists per foot. Cat6 should be able to run over 1000 when the hardware arrives there and you will get longer runs with less loss on Cat6.

UTP = Unshielded Twisted Pair. This is the most common for home or business. There is no shielding in the cable itself. In places such as factories that may have electrical interference from heavy machinery, STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) may need to be used.

RJ45 is the type of connector on the end. RJ = Registered Jack. Your typical network cable uses an RJ45 connector whereas your typical phone line will use an RJ11 connector.

Any new runs I do I use Cat6. I recently wired my den with network drops and used all Cat6. It's really close to the price of Cat5e now so really a no-brainer.

A typical run can be about 100m (300 feet). This will of course depend on environment variables, the quality of the cable used, and the quality of the ends.

I have found that my range extender lies to me so I ignore the bars I am probably about 10M-15M from my router it's downstairs and I'm upstairs at other end of the house I did find a wireless solution which was get a n-grade router good quality wireless adapter and then add 3 9.5 DBi antenna the only problem being those things are huge and ugly lol and even then the stability of the connection wasn't as good as with a cable connection

main internet usage streaming porn....I mean up movies:P

Gaming mainly FPS<---biggest place to notice a change

and also do alot of downloading

Cheers for the answer, so i should be looking for a cat6e rj45 cable. I've worked it out to be 25m wrapped tight up to the house walls so im going to order 30m I think just to be on the safe side. You say it depends on the quality of the cable. could you recommend a cable to me? Would this do the job just fine?

Looks kinda crappy. Cat6 is usually 23 or 24AWG and should be solid copper. That stuff you linked is 26AWG (so thinner) copper clad aluminum. It may work fine though, can't tell you for sure.

IMO the longer the cable, the better quality you should have

This man speaks the truth.

Also, look at that description above for that ebay cable. It's only rated for up to 150ft. That should give a hint at the quality of the cable. You're only going about 90 feet, so you should be fine, but I know for myself I always buy quality when it comes to anything.

Could you link me to some better quality cables?

Personally, I avoid ebay like the plague. Look on some of the UK etailers or you might even be able to go to a local PC store and have them make you a custom cable for cheap. I used to do that for customers all the time.

Just look for Cat6 UTP RJ45. AFAIK, Cat6e really isn't a standard yet so is being slung around by dodgy places. Be sure the cable is solid copper. Not stranded and no aluminum. Cat6 should be either 23 or 24AWG. I think the solid is 23AWG and the stranded is 24AWG.

If you can posistion the router directly below your bedroom somehow and run cable outside the house,up an exterior wall, your signal loss will be minimal,as your decresing the length of cable significantly.

Yeah I thought about doing this. I'm on the other side of the house though.
