Which cat Ethernet cable to choose

I'm not all there when it comes to networking so here I am :p :p

I'll need 40m of cable from the router to my TV, my 2TB WD NAS is connected to the router using a short cat 6 Ethernet cable.

TV model number is 55UB820V and plays smaller files like 3gb episodes perfectly, but once I try to watch a decent quality movie that's let's say on average 15GB then it always results in loading every minute for a few seconds.

The question is, with it being 40m do I need cat 6 or will 5e be fine? I can have a family member install 5e for next to nothing, they don't monitor how much of that stuff gets used where he works but if I wanted cat 6 I'd have to pay for the cable. I don't mind paying, that's no issue but if 5e is fine then I'd rather go that route and avoid the extra cost of cat6.

I'd of assumed wireless would of been fine as a 15gb file transferring over 2 hours is only around 2.1mb/s. Cheers for the reply, it will be getting done at weekend so I'll see what others have to say too.

I would go 5e myself as that supports the gigabit ethernet connections that are standard these days.

I think you are wasting your time wiring up your TV, Wireless should be MORE than enough for a TV I would be looking at a better router. Second instead of getting a long ass Ethernet look at a powerline adapter. As much as I hate them being a network engineer you are only plugging in a TV. As for the cable 5e is plenty. Also I hope you flashed that WD with a new/better firmware. A lot of your streaming woes can probably be linked to the WD NAS drive. They have been known for being VERY slow for file transfer due to the terrible firmware and lack of RAM. And when it comes to streaming forget about it. I also know from personal experience.

Cheers for the replies guys.

The NAS streams fine with Ethernet connected devices. I have a TV in the same room as the PC/router/NAS and that works perfectly. Just the any device using WiFi like the TV in the living room using WiFi that struggles with large files. I have the latest firmware :)

You're lucky then, my WD NAS can't stream s*** lol That's why I built my own PLEX server :D

Nice, I might look in to building my own server. Is there a thread of yours anywhere? Or should I google? ^_^

I don't have a thread. But it's just like building any other computer. Mine has an i3, 8GB RAM, and 20TB of storage. I am not sure how smart your TV but a lot of Smart TV's have a PLEX app. If not you can get something like a Roku or most other media sticks. And with a PLEX server you can stream your content via the PLEX app for your phone :D I'm far to lazy to do this any other way, PLEX is just simple.

I might have missed something, or that distance might be more than is capable, but have you considered power line adapters? I haven't personally used them but some of my friends have used them after my recommendation and told me that they found them really simple to set up and use. Just my 2 cents ^_^.

Cheers dude, my TV would would probably pick it up like it picks up my WD NAS, failing that I have the WD TV Live in a drawer somewhere and that picks up any shared network storage, I can share a folder on my PC and it will pick it up under "Windows Shares" :D and you say you're too lazy to do it any other way, it's not your fault... It comes naturally with being a network engineer :p :p

I did consider power line adapters but I can have an ethernet cable put in and it will only be visible for a few inches near the router and a few inches near the TV (well not at all at the TV, will be behind the stand)

Yea but how much will that cost you just got some powerline adapters today and I now prefer then to wifi for my printer and desktop and they only cost £24.99.
