My Rig In-Progress

Well, its about that time. The time of change, the time of evolution, the time of adapt or die. It's time for me to get with the times and retire my computer and get a new one. Why not just upgrade? I've already done that, i've pushed my system to it's near limits. Here is my current setup:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200 (2.0 Ghz OC'd to 2.3 GHz)

Mobo: Asus K8V-SE Deluxe

Hard Drive: Western Digital 120GB

RAM: Corsair XMS DDR-400 (2GB)

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro (AGP)

PSU: Antec 450W TruPower

Case: Chieftec MidTower Blue ( 5 Fans)

Cooling: Antec Video Card Cooler

Cooling: Antec HD Digital Cooler w/Digital Readout

My first Rig: 2004- ( still chugging ) :wavey:

I built this baby back in '04, and it sole function was to run 3 games, which at the time, were the apex of games: Doom 3, Half Life 2, World of Warcraft. Since then, i've actually been able to run most games on high settings, like Battlefield 2, FEAR, Dawn of War + Xpacs, Total War: ROME, Sims... to name a few, and pretty much my system was more than capable of handling them, high framerates, good PQ quality, not bad for a first time system builder

It wasn't until Company of Heroes came out that i noticed i couldn't run it at high framerates with high PQ...I dreaded this day, the day my rig showed signs of 'age'. Then, World in Conflict and Supreme Commander came out and totally said " hell nah you can't handle us", to top it off, C&C came out and my system struggled with that game, not choppy but can't put things on high with good framerates. Then the final blow: Warhammer Online comes out.

I can quest just fine in WAR, scenarios are all right at 20-30Fps with a lot of dips into single digits when all gathered in one spot, but open RvR is pretty unplayable.

Oh well time to upgrade, and this will be my new rig, i focus on price/performance/with upgradeability in mind. What this means is, I shop around for the best bang for the buck, but i want to be able to upgrade as much as i can, and i think i hit that spot with this rig, despite Nehalem releasing around the corner, i mean i feel this system will last me another 3 years solid, given that multi-threaded games are still pretty few, if not more than 4 years lol well my current rig is still chugging!

Heres the new setup:

Motherboard: Asus P5Q Premium

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 750GB

Processor: Intel Core2Duo E8500 Wolfsdale 3.16 GHz

RAM: G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1000

Video Card: Asus Radeon 4870 1GB

PSU: Antec 550W Modular CrossFire

Case: Antec Nine Hundred

Accessories: AlphaCool Graphical Display

My new Rig: Expecting birth in '08

This rig is going to be a beast. Why a Dual Core and not Quad? Because i wanted a 3.0 processor and the E8500 is at 180 and the Quad Core equivalent is still at 400 bucks, i can essentially buy the wolfsdale now, wait till the quad comes down to 200 bucks and still save over 100 bucks by just waiting, all the while enjoying great performance now, as games are still relatively better played on higher clocked processors, and dual core to quad core is minimal as multi threaded games are not that comomn...yet.

And that my basic ideology when building a system: How far do i need to plan ahead in order to take advantage of the tech now? If i buy the latest and greatest, yet way more expensive tech now, will i even be using said tech to its fullest ( think DDR3/Quads)

Also, i wanted to know what you guys thought of the new system i m building, what would you change and why? Remember though, as much as i would love the latest and greatest, price plays a big factor, which means i would love to have a Nehalem setup, i know its probably gonna be a bit too pricey/performance. I don't know just share your thoughts :)

Anywhoo, ive got most of those parts out the way that are not listed, namely the DVD drive, floppy, etc...stuff. On that list i just need the mobo/vid card/processor and im all caught up to the PCI eXpress age lol hope you guys enjoyed my brief history.

hehe nice new rig man u should look my sig :D anyway gl with the new system and yes my is showing signs of age too ;)

damn our rigs could be related lol, glad to see someone else push their systems to the limits :)

Its all trial and error at the end of the day, you can not buy this and save the money to buy that or get this and skrimp together to get that...that's a decent rig you've got lined up. I'd come down on the cpu a tad though dude. Look at an e6750 or something. Will do the job lovely...

Not going to watercool or go nuts??? Ha ha ha. You soon will!! Rofl.

Erm, what? The E6750 is an old processor. In terms of value, it's going to be about the same as the E8500.

I would, however, get an E8400 if it is £20-30 less or so.

inother words, get a lower clocking cpu and just overclock it a little. i paid £50 posted for my E6750, hence why i said to get one. I can order you one if you do so wish...
