My mad OC

I just OCed my Linksys router from 200mhz to 216mhz. Woot!

Idk if ill keep going. If i can find a steady 5 or 12v source on the router board (So i dont cut the power cable) ill put a fan on the chip and OC it more. I just started messing with this thing tonight. Got it apart (While it was on) and BOY that Broadcom chip gets hot as hell! I put a ram heatsink from a 5600ultra (Big long one) on it and its keeping it cool now.

So far, 16mhz makes a huge difference. Seems load times for my wee router are less and i think if i went to speed test id find my internet speed might be faster.....maybe. Idk how that works.

Is it the Linksys WRT54G-router? I've got a WRT54GC, and it doesn't seem to be any method out there to OC it, though I would love to try it. Could use a stronger signal in the bedroom...

I overclocked my WRT54GS, but overclocking the actual processing unit made no difference.

Overclocking the Wifi for better range works really well, but overclocking the Processor doesn't seem to do much other than heat it up. Probably because it's not really doing much. Mine is running a custom firmware with a custom iptables firewall script.

Its made a drastic improvement in my networking speed by 16mhz. When i can find a reliable 5v or 12v source off the board ill be putting a fan on it to cool the heatsink i put on it and OC it more.

And yea its a WRT54G v4. Im using the DD-WRT frimware.

There are linux based firmware changes for the WRT54 series that allow incredible increases in signal strengths and frequency changes - all pretty much illegal, cos it can interfere with lots of stuff.

There are 3rd party OS that allow for better logging, better traffic flow, use memory that the lesser models don`t use even tho it`s there.

All kinds of crazy stuff!

Not going to put the hack sources here, but google IS your friend here, Tomato is a nice shade of red. There are communities/forums/etc.

The Blue Box is a Linux based firmware for the Linksys which you would think is illegal but Linksys has it on their own site.

The DD-WRT is not illegal. The guys who created the firmware for it actualy create firmware for a few retail Buffalo and Linksys routers.

Nooo, not the firmwares being illegal, some of the things u can do with them. Like broadcasting outside of signal boundries for areas. The air is policed.

Well we dont have that problem here. The Blue Box though on the other hand is a Linux programed Linksys router that specificaly scans for open signals with an internet connection and latches on to it. You connect to it through telnet and can even program to sniff encryption keys to get into encrypted 64bit WEP signals.

THAT i would think would be illegal, but its on the Linksys site.
