My First Rig - 350D, VI Gene, 4770K, 780

Looks awesome. The red PSU cables are class, and I like that you've re-coloured the GTX logos. Really neat, too. It's a really smart looking rig.

The more I see of them the more I like the Corsair 350D. Build looks awesome and has made me seriously consider an matx build when it comes upgrade time.

Thank you, those cables are a dream to work with too, pretty flexible and very solid feeling.

As for the mATX, it was kind of a nod towards my wife - before this I had one of those xbox-sized Alienware X51's, which is actually a very good machine. But I've just got over 9 months of treatment for cancer and wanted to build something to get my brain back into an IT frame-of-mind before going back to work (which I did a couple of weeks back). So I knew she wouldn't mind me building whatever so long as it was a huge shock in going up from the X51. It was the case that really did it for me, as soon as I saw the reviews come in I knew that would be perfect. Then it was just a case of waiting for the mobo - I'm a spokesman for Intel sometimes so managed to get my 4770K in plenty of time, but my word waiting for the mobo seemed like forever.

Since posting this I've added a couple of things, a new Logitech G35 3D headset which looks great, the 3D thing really works but it's a bit tight at the moment. Oh and I got a Corsair K95 keyboard, I was going to go for the K90 which is black and red but I wanted all the programmable buttons you get with the K95.

Next up - maybe, is a BenQ XL2420TX monitor - it does 120hz and 3D, bit of a gimmick the last one but there you go - it's also black and red too. If I do go for that, still deciding, the only bit of remaining kit from the old rig will be the mouse, a cheapo MS one I've got very used to :)

Really like your build m8. Looks much better with that SATA cable sorted and out of the way.

However, if it was sitting on my desk the GPU would bother me and continually annoy me the way you covered the GeForce logo.

I'm not saying it'd look better with it removed as green would look crap.

I'm just saying the way you've done the red cover up kinda ruins it for me.

Or maybe I need to go to the doctors again regarding my OCD. ;)

It's nowhere near as annoying as the photo suggests, or having it as green - my daughter told me of a gel-like paint that she's used in the past that might be a good substitute.

I have the same colour scheme and personally I don't mind the green GeForce logos, when bathed in clean white light it all looks really neat together. I really love the 350D though, if only my motherboard would fit, I would buy one immediately.

Just for an extreme OCD tip: turn your bottom intake fan round so it matches the one above it and the sticker is the right way around. Then route the cable up behind the fans so its not visible from the front. ^_^

that looks stunning i like what you did with the gpu with the smoked window door on you wouldn't notice it :D

I have the M6 Gene aswell. Are you running adaptive voltage on the Vcore?

I was a little confused when setting mine up. Ended up setting 1.05V as the base then just added the extra little offset I needed to get to the same voltage as what I used when setting manual Vcore for overclock stability testing...

You're right, you don't see it at all at night, here's a (grainy) pic. Oh and I added a nice new 120hz/3D monitor today too - happened to be black and red :)

I'm REALLY no expert when it comes to overclocking, so I used that '4 Way Tuning" thing that does your fans etc. It goes off and does its thing and set mine at 4.6Ghz at about 1.26v or so - memory at 1866 via XMP - seems stable enough though OCCT does make it get very hot (~88c !).

Nice build, the 350D is a very nice case, I was considering one for my own build which is currently a WIP but I couldn't get away from the 300R (windowed edition) and stuck with that haha.

Nice to see a mATX build for a change tho :)

I've set my OCCT to stop if a core hits 80c. TTL among others say that's the highest temperature you really want your cores to endure over any significant amount of time.

I tried following TTL's Ivy Bridge oc guide, but LinusTechTips' made a guide for Haswell with the Asus Maximus 6 so I followed that one. Seems like you dont have to disable so many things in the bios with haswell, as they dont make too much of an impact on the overclock. The only thing I've done slightly differently is to set the load line calibration to level 1, rather than auto, which has resulted in an incredibly stable Vcore. More so than with auto, where the voltage seemed to fluctuate roughly 10%.

I have 4.4Ghz @ 1.143V and I dont really want to push the boundaries to see how far I have to increase the voltage to get to 4.6. The performance increase is tiny anyway.

I finally got around to replacing the tiny bit of red cellophane in front of the green "GeForce GTX" illuminated part on my 780 - I found a mid-red glass paint pen - only about £5/$8 or so in an art-supplies store. I very carefully drew over the green, one coat was a little orange so I let it dry and did a second coat and it's just as red as the cellophane in the dark but looks much nicer with the lights on. Just thought you should know.

Oh and I've just ordered one of the official EVGA 780 back-plates, can't wait - I know it's a minor thing but I think it'll make it look much better.

On a separate note I'm seriously considering going for a second 780 - I don't quite know why, mostly for the looks - that's stupid isn't it? I also like the new EVGA SLI bridges that light up too. Then again I'm also thinking of water-blocking the 780 - again I don't know why, I need to be busier doing something else don't I? :)

I was adviced to not go for another 770 as the top card would get very hot (not much room to breathe). Maybe it would be slightly better with the 780 which blows the air out on the sides.

Loving the rig.. would like to see the results of this glass pen.. as i've got a 780 in my black/red rig and was looking for ways to mod the colour.

did you get the back plate straight from EVGA?

I'll try to get a photo but to be honest you can imagine what it looks like - it's red instead of green - well very slightly orange but 90% red - it really worked a treat, really happy with it. Oh and no, I ordered the back plate online, possibly from Japan, it's not actually arrived yet though - you've reminded me to check up on it - cheers.

erm...I bought it in a craft shop and gave it to my daughter when I finished - it looked like a regular marker pen and if you asked in a craft shop for a 'glass pen' I'm sure you'd get the same one - oh and it had a red cap if that helps.
