I've never built a PC before now

and and my bugets just over £1000 ( which im saving at the moment)

I'll just outline what i want my build to be at the moment and maybe you guys

could comment on what you think how i could improve it, but within the buget!

Case: Corsair Obsidion 650D

MotherBoard: ASUS P8P67 Rev3

CPU: Intel i7 2600(i might get the 2600k)

Graphics Card: Sapphire Raedon HD6870 Toxic edition 1GB

HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200

PSU: Corsair 650HX

RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Corsair Vengeance Blue

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64)

Optical drive: Sony AD-7261S-0B SATA Writer

Monitor:Philips 244E1SB 24"

Other stuff:

I'll probably get a 90GB OCZ VERTEX 2.5" SATA II for boot and to save games on

I don't know if its worth getting a sound card

ill probably get 2.1 logitech speakers (just cause there cheap)

I want to do a little bit of overclocking

I'd quite like to run the XSPC Rasa750 240RS watercooling kit with UV blue theme i'm not sure wethers its really worth it for my build but id quite like to do it anyway.

Hope i haven't missed anything

Thanks in advance for your comments and advice!!

I'd change the motherboard for a P67 Sabretooth or maybe the P8P67 PRO I have the standard P8P67 and it's not great at overclocking.

If you are going to be gaming and not using your PC Video/Photo editing or 3D modeling/rendering you may as well save a bit of money and get a 2500K you won't notice the difference in gaming.

With the money you save from the 2600K you could get a better GPU like the GTX 560TI or a 6950.

I'm not sure but i think I read somewhere that that case has really bad air flow but I could be getting it mixed up with another, just thought i'd mention it just in case it is that one.

The Rasa kit would be great if you want to get it, you will get much better temps than an air cooler so it's definietly worth it.

It's not worth getting a sound card for 2.1 speakers the on board will be good enough you should only bother with a sound card if you have a good set of speakers.

Everything else looks good though should be a decent build for your first time.

If you want to do any overclocking you'll need one of the K edition processors.

If you're only gaming get a 2500k and 4GB of RAM rather than 8GB.

If you're doing heavy video/photo editing or rendering of any kind stick with 8GB and get a 2600k.

Try to squeeze out some extra money for a better board like the Sabertooth or a Gigabyte UD4/5.

Also what CPU cooler are you planning to get? May or may not affect your choice of RAM.

Ok well I'll change to the 2500k

and change the MoBo to either the p8p67 pro or the gigabyte ud4

also change the graphics to the HD 6950

I want to use a water cooling kit for the CPU so that shouldn't affect the RAM

About the RAM Will 1x 4GB card or 2x 2GB stick perform better?

Also do you think its worth it getting an SSD around 90GB for booting and games storage?

Thanks for your help so far!

I'm not sure about the RAM and whether it wold be better to get 1x 4gb or 2x 2gb.

It's definietly worth getting an SSD if you can, it will boot a lot faster than a normal HDD and load apps a lot quicker as well.

two more questions

for today

Do you think a 650W power supply is enough for what i want to run + for upgrades in future like using crossfire and stuff?

Is it worth getting an optical drive that supports blu-ray?

You will need at least a 750W PSU for 6950 in crossfire so i'd get a 800/850W PSU to give you a bit of headroom for overclocking and other components.

Get a optical drive if you are going to watch Blu-Rays on your PC but if you don't use disks I wouldn't bother personally. You can get everything through digital downloads these days, I haven't used an optical drive for about two years now I just buy digital downloads.

Yh ive decided on an corsair 850AX and a Sapphire HD 6950 1GB

About SSD I dont know what size i should get for booting 64 bit windows 7(i think thats 20GB0) and storing games

Where you planning on trying to put a 6970 BIOS on it to unlock parts of the card?

If not then cool but if so then I don't think it can be done with the 1GB versions. Well that's what I heard as far as the XFX cards go when they started doing them so I'm only presuming it would be the same for the Sapphire cards.

That kinda depends.

If your not going to try an flash it with a 6970 BIOS or not using multiple monitors or very high resolutions then probably not.

This compares a 1GB and 2GB 6950 together and as you can see there very close http://www.anandtech...duct/331?vs=293

Flashing a 6950 with a 6970 BIOS basically gives you around the performance of a stock 6970. The problem is that you need to spend the extra money on 2GB 6950, and one that you know you can successfully flash with a 6970 BIOS.

These two cards seem to be able to be modded but it's not confirmed that the versions the site where given will be the same as the retail versions.

Probably a wise choice

Edit: If your thinking of watercooling though you might want to pop onto Sapphire forums (if your still going with Sapphire) and see if there is a waterblock for the model your thinking of buying just in case you want to add one later. Unless your sure you won't want to I guess

What SieB said

. Would be nice to have a rig like that, I remember when my AMD 4400 x2 @ 2.2GHZ with 2GB and 7800GT was the best money could buy
smile.gif
. I remember running 6 of Enemy Territory and still getting stable 125fps. Now I try that with a quad and only managed to get 125 on 1 of them
biggrin.gif
. God was hardware + software more optimised back then
smile.gif
. Wish I could get that feeling back again with all the new components etc...

Out those four, the MSI 6950 twin frozr 3 OC without a doubt.

There is a chance that that card also has a reference PCB so you might be able to add a waterblock to it later if you wanted although with the twin frozr 3 you might never want to. You could always double check this by asking the question in the Aria thread if you wanted.

If it really is a pre overclocked version of the standard MSI 6950 twin frozr 3 then you should be able to do the 6970 bios trick with it some point down the line if you felt up to it.

With it being from aria you might also be able to get free shipping so you should contact Rawz and ask him about it or the answers will be in the Aria thread.

+1 vote to the MSI 6950
