Had this mobo - MSI P35 Platinum - for a few months, without any problems initially.

I've been using without a case - just open on my desk, on top of an anti-static bag then foam mat. Booting using screwdriver method.

First problem - it wouldn't post when I plugged my router into the LAN port, with the PSU off - hung with all leds showing red. Unplugging the router, booting then plugging the router back in solved this - as long as the PSU was left on it would happily boot.

Second problem - following a power cut I tried booting it and forgot to disconnect the router first, wouldn't post (see above - will only boot with router connected if PSU is left supplying power to mobo). Disconnected router, rebooted, reconnected router while it was posting and going through the green LED sequence and it took a strop. Wouldn't post for several days. Finally posted when I disconected monitor from graphics card.

Mobo was fine for a few weeks after that.

Final problem - PC froze while I was looking around second life (not uncommon for freeze-ups there). Nothing would work when I tried to get out of it (ctrl alt del, etc). Shorted the restart pins and pc finally powered down but didn't restart. Board refuses to post - all red leds. Tried removing everything one at a time. Posted when I removed the graphics card. Powered board down by shorting power pins.

Hasn't posted since - not even when I remove the graphics card. Tried removing one ram stick, different slots.

I've cleared the cmos numerous times, removed the battery etc.

Nothing seems to have been oveheating - CPU temps were fine when it was working.

Is this likely to be a damaged mobo, damaged bios or faulty PSU?

Any ideas to get it working etc would be extremely welcome.

Thanks.

Have you got the latest bios installed?

Sounds like something they would fix in a release.

It does. And if I could get the damn thing to post I'd update the bios. :)

If anyone's interested, I tested the psu rails with a multi-meter and the +5vsb rail was low at 4.2v - this is the standby voltage and wakes up the pc from sleep mode, and also powers wake on lan, keyboard and mouse if configured to do so.

If the voltage is low though, the PSU won't start at all from a cold start - this wasn't the case with mine but I think the mobo was right on the edge of it's tolerance.

I've a couple of asus sli boards which I thought were dead as they wouldn't power at all, but this will be caused by a low +5vsb rail, so it's likely the psu.

Hope this helps someone with similar problems.

If a pc refuses to power up, check the +5vsb rail (this is different to the +5v rail)

Only the +5vsb rail is low.

The +12v, +5v and +3.3v rails are fine.

Unfortunately, although the +5vsb rail doesn't do much, a weak one is enough to stop a pc dead.
