Hey guys I am starting my first custom build and I was looking at getting a gtx 580 Lightning extreme.

Primary use is going to be for gaming

Just had a few questions about it.

Is it over priced versus a regular gtx 580? It is about $600-700

Is 3gb of memory overkill for a single monitor?

and

Will any card that fits PCI express2 fit PCI express3

Would be thankful for any feedback.

You only need 1.5gb for single screen gaming. If i remember correctly the 3gb is a few fps slower in some games on a single screen. It only show its full potential in multi-screen setups.

Lightning xtrme 832.

3GB may be overkill for our current games, though even as soon as next year it might come in handy. If you buy a new card every generation then this isnt really a concern, although if you keep your cards for a few years then the 3gb will be a great investment. I have the card in question and already I have seen more than 2gb being used. This is on a 1080p monitor with bf3.

Hope this helps.

BF3 supposedly has a bug that causes it to use more RAM then needed. My 1.5GB 580 copes extremely well on max settings on a 1920 x 1200 resolution

. Future games will need more RAM so 3GB would still be a good investment.

Yeah I havent seen anywhere close to 2gb lately but anyway, the extra memory will be needed for next gen games. I plan on keeping my 580 for a few years yet. Might buy another one when kelper Is out. Sorry for Offtopic.

Thanks for the helpful comments I think I will go with it.

Just so I dont have buy another card in a year or so.

As I am new to all this any input regarding which components to choose would be greatly appreciated.

Should I go for the x79 Mother Board and the new i7 processor or just get a older sandy bridge cpu and motherboard?

Thanks

If you can afford it then yeah go with it, however the 2600k is still a beast of a processor. It all depends if you use 6 cores. If not, then sandy bridge will be tbe best choice, and the money you save you can buy a ssd or something nice.

If you are just gaming X79 doesnt seem worth the extra money really, if you look at the benchmarks the difference is only a few fps. Like people have said before the money u will save by getting sandy can be put to better use elsewhere.

It's really not, you'll only notice extreme fluidity compared to smooth play - not needed at all but of course six cores in a multithreaded game are better
