MSI Big Bang Power II DOA?

Hi

I've recently bought a MSI Big Bang Power II motherboard. It arrived last wednesday, But didn't have time to try it out until yesterday.

I've put the cpu in it, ram graphics card, cpu cooler and everything else on it to test it on air before buying al the watercooling goodies.

So the problem I'm having is when starting it up it gives me no picture runs about 15-20 seconds and shuts down. It boots again and same thing happens, it goes in a continues cycle. Until i turn of the PSU.

The Motherboard has a Debug display. It shows code 09 according to manual this is "Power on Southbridge Initializing".

I switched the Bios switch to see if it would be Bios related but same thing.

The graphics card and ram are out of my current rig so they work properly, because I'm using them now.

Anyone had the same problem? Or is there something I could try to get it working.

Worst case my gues would be it was Dead on Arrival and I'll have to RMA it.

I use a corsair AX850. It should be sufficient I think. Could try It tough I have a 1000w PSU in this, but this means I'll completly have to tear it all out of my current case. Not looking forward to that. I'm gonna wait with this. Maybe there are a couple of easier things I can try before I do that.

the rest of the specs are i7 3930k and the 12Gb ram and R6970 out of this rig.

The AX850 should be more than sufficient.. could always try a different PSU just to be sure, If that doesn't work I'd say it's your mobo =/

the fact it starts for 15-20 secs would rule out DOA but not issues. have ya removed battery unplugged it and pressed power button for 10+ seconds??? it may have some kind of bios setting thats mucking ya up.

Okay, I've figured it out, I think.

Anyhow it works, because I'm posting this reply using the rig with the MSI motherboard.

What did I do? The motherboard has 2x8 pin ATX powerconnectors on the Mainboard. According to what I've read before I put the rig together first time around. It only needs one unless you're going for overclocking it uses the 2nd for the extra power consumption.

when I tried the first time I only connected JPWR2 on the MB. Now I connected both JPWR2 & JPWR3

Next The motherboard supports dual triple and quad channel memory, firts time I put all 3 memory sticks from the other rig in. This time around I only installed two. I've followed in both cases the instructions inside the manual for proper placement of the memory modules.

And finally, I've cleared the CMOS. Did not use the battery trick but the Clear CMOS button on the back of the MB.

What the exact problem was I'm not sure. Was it not enough power to the Motherboard or a hardware conflict that required a CMOS reset. Can't say, Anyhow very happy it works now and that there's nothing wrong with the mainboard.

Thank you for the help guys

i too have this board, with the ax850 power supply and mine boots fine. Its not a power supply issue. I have only 1 x 8pin cpu power connected along with the 24pin power. Though i have all my ram slots filled.

Thank You Simsimma4, You confirm what I've tought that it shouldn't need the 2nd 8pin-ATX connector.

May try it again with only the one on JPWR2 later when I reboot the system

I really don't know what caused the issue, is it the triple channel that the MB didn't like?. Can't say Used only the 2 sticks RAM now, because the 3rd is a pita to get out from underneath the noctua cooler. Or did it only need to have the CMOS reset. Or maybe it was some other minor issue I overlooked and unknowingly corrected.

Just happy it works
