Motherboard dent my CPU, is this normal?

Hi everyone, I need your insight.

I installed an i7 3770 in my P8Z77-V LX motherboard and the two tabs that hold the CPU in place dented/scratched the CPU on the left and right hand sides of the IHS. I understand that the cores are in the center of the CPU, but I don't know if this is normal (?) and will this have any affect on the CPU in the future?

Thanks.

Hi,

Please find attached photos. Let me know what you think?

Thanks

That looks fine to me, it{EDIT: Should NOT} effect cooling at all as it is not on the top shroud, only the bits where it is stuck on to the PCB, but it wouldn’t hurt sending it back and getting another one, does the place of purchase have instillation damage insurance??

I don't think this has anything to do with the cooler, the motherboard tabs on the left and right hand side that holds the CPU in place dented the CPU as you can see from the pictures.

I'm just worried this might affect the CPU and its peformance.

No, it shouldn't in any way impact the performance, I would say its absolutely fine, those tabs that were "Dented" are only there to keep the shroud on the PCB...

Did you read what I said? I think you may have mounted the CPU Cooler incorrectly. Look at the instructions again and ensure you mount it properly, if you damage the IHS whilst installing the CPU you'll bugger your warranty and could KO some of your gear.

from what i can see its just compression marks from the cpu retention bracket, which just shows its being retained by the bracket
as long as the cpu is held firmly and is not sloppy under the bracket then i shouldn't forsee any major issues as its just the ear lugs and not the main IHS plate

Be careful you don't do more damage, you could completely destroy the re-sale value of a completely decent board.

To me it doesnt look like the retention bracket for the processor is right? For a start the bits above the 'dents' on the processor are not symmetrical and they just seriously dont look right to me. I'm actually considering taking my cooler off, as we have a similar board to check if those bits are right. Cant think of what would have caused it other than badly mounting the cooler, or a fault with it from the start

As above it's the retention bracket lugs. It won't cause you any headaches at the minute.
If the consensus is that these marks shouldn't be made then I can only see 2 possible causes.
1. Processor wasn't entirely correctly seated in the socket prior to closing the bracket.
2. Too much pressure has been applied to the heatsink assembly which has caused excessive force being placed upon the retention bracket causing the marks.

Either way the location of the dents will have no impact upon the processor, the heat spreader is glued to the cores and they don't come off easily. Assuming the force is purely in a downward moment then you'll have no issues in the future, but if you end up with a horizontal component then there is a small risk of bowing the heat spreader and in doing so lift it from the cores. Instead of a - heat spreader you'll have a ͡

Don't think you have anything to worry about though, just watch how much torque/force you apply to your heatsink.

Yeh looks to me like it wasn't seated properly. Its not just the CPU you can damage, the pins on the mother boards socket are very delicate.
