mother boards

Hi Guys,

Looking to build my first computer, but don’t know what way to go with the mother board/chipset, I know tiny tom Logan has the X58 chipset, but I allot know of people going for the Z68 chipset, which is the best way to go?, I have also been reading about this Ivy Bridge chipset will there be any benefit waiting for this?

The only thing that I have bought is a Cooler Master silent Pro Gold 1200 W Power supply, looking for the best overclocking board out there and the best memory for the board, and the quickest 120 solid state hard drive.

I will pay up to £1,600 for a full rig to start with.

Was think of the Fractal Design Define XL Full Tower Case or Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower, so I can put in two gtx 580 graphic cards when I get the money,was thinking about the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 580 SOC 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card, what u think. Or can u suggest anything better.

will be used for mostly gaming and some picture editing.

Depending on your budget if you are looking for a Sandy Bridge build a good gaming build would be:-

2500K

Asus Sabertooth P67

GTX 570

4 or 8GB RAM

Corsair AX850

Noctua D14 or Thermalright Silver Arrow - if you want to overclock.

Decent Mid-Tower case

and your choise of hdd or ssd.

i agree with sheroo however i would go with 8gb of ram as some games load alot into memory now and if you are runnign other programs it gives it that little security of extra if needed as the prices are nothing compared to what they used to be

if you want a good simple case go for the fractal R3 cant go wrong brilliant cooling with almost perfect silence

as for the other parts i would deffo go with whats been suggested

. If you don't want a HDD and an SSD, get a 2TB Western Digital Black or a similar high performance HDD and you will not be disappointed. I store most of my games on my Western Digital black and they load very quickly indeed.

Ah, I missed that. The Kingston Hyper X SSD is a very fast SSD, it might not be the quickest out there, but it is in the top 3 I would say. It looks the dog's danglies, but that won't make a difference if you're not going to see it.

I'm extremely happy with the choices I made. The 650d is very roomy and will easily fit dual 580's. The Gigabyte 580 soc is the fastest factory overclocked 580 along with the lightning and they cost/perform about the same. You can't go wrong with either.

I would highly recommend the Obsidian 650d and Gigabyte GTX 580 soc. I own these so I am kinda biased.

Funny you should mention the 650D as I was looking at Tom's mini review on it this morning. Its probably the first Corsair case that I really like. Its simple but has all the features that you could ever want including a stealthed drive dock and usb3. I've also done quite a bit of research on the Fractal XL. The reviews seem to suggest that the cpu cooling is pretty good - but I'm still not convinced at to how good that top 180mm fan is. I think the Corsair beats it though in terms of features and you could put a water cooling kit in there or even a H100 in the roof (should you want to).

@yassarikhan786 - what usb3 cable does the 650D use? Is it a pass through to the back panel or a proper motherboard header?

On the back of the case there is a space to pass the USB cables through. The space is on the top right at the back. The USB cables are quite long so you have to kind of twist some of the cable behind the motherboard tray and pass the cable through the space at the back.

I'm not sure if that explains it enough.

EDIT: I just bought a monitor from overclockers. I should have added the adapter, arrgh, now I have to buy it separately and pay separate shipping costs
