MONITOR SELECTION help required

I am currently in the process of designing a new gaming rig, and of course I am want some opinions other than my own before I break the bank!!

Here it is so far:

CPU INTEL I5 2500k

MOBO ASUS p8p67 evo rev 3.1

RAM G.SKILLS 8gb (2x4) Ripjaw X 1600 DDR3 @ 8-8-8-24

GPU MSI Radeon 6950 Twin Frozr 3 2gb (one for now, Xfire later)

HDD WD Velociraptor @ 10000 rpm ( I already own this, will upgrade to SSD when it makes sense!!!)

CASE Coolermaster HAF X (I like BIG cases with BIG fans, my other one is an antec 1200)

PSU Corsair CMPSU-850TX v2 850w

MONITOR DELL u2412m

And of course I have a couple of questions!

Online all IPS monitors are getting mixed reviews as far as gaming is concerned. What are your thoughts on the Dell I mentioned earlier? (PLEASE DON'T COMMENT ON THE MONITOR IF YOU HAVE NEVER USED THE DELL U2412M)

And while I believe I will be very happy with 24" of 1920x1200 gaming @60hz and about a trillion colors....

1) are these 2 issues big enough (anti glare coating/overdrive reverse ghosting)? Should I be looking at something else?

Unfortunately testing the monitor for myself is not an option because of my remote location, even returning something is not easy.

2)Should I be looking above 24" or is there nothing reasonable out there

3)Are there better 24" IPS monitors that don't cost twice as much?

4)16:10 is still cool for games right?

5)Is the PSU overkill or futureproof? (Modular is a non issue)

4)Is there any other advice, or anything you would change in the build above?

Feel free to rip it to bits

Thanks

Hi there.

I don't have the monitor you have in mind, but because I have an IPS panel monitor I can answer some of your questions.

1. I have not noticed any input lag or ghosting at all. The anti-glare coating is only visible on white back-grounds, but I guess it's something you either hate or don't mind. Personally I don't mind it at all. The anti-glare coating has a sort of sparkling effect on white backgrounds, but it is not distracting (imo). I'm not quite sure what the overdrive reverse ghosting you are talking about is, but I'm guessing it reduces the ghosting effect. My Dell U2410 has a gaming mode which supposedly reduces input lag and ghosting, but I haven't used it at all when gaming.

2. For me 1920 x 1200 will be the largest resolution I will be playing at for the foreseeable future. I have not gamed at larger resolutions, but games look pretty darn awesome at 1920 x 1200 so I personally don't see the need for a larger resolution.

3. No comment as I've only used one 24inch IPS monitor.

4. 16:10 is still good for gaming

.

5. The bigger the PSU, the less likely it is that you will have to change the PSU when upgrading or adding to your system.

Thanks man, that is brill help.

You got the reverse ghosting right, "they" say it is a side effect of the overdrive, something to stop ghosting, but some argue that it is not needed. Lets hope my eyes are like yours!

Yeh. I've played a lot of fast paced games and haven't noticed any input lag or ghosting at all. I think its just overly exagerrated that ips panels are not that good for gaming.

I have a dell 2407wfp monitor and it is amazing. So I can definitely vouch for dell ips screens. Mine has never had any ghosting either.

Oh and to go back to something previous you said, you do need an ssd

single best upgrade I made

The time for an SSD upgrade will come.....just not yet

I have decided to get by on HDDs that I already have as HDD prices and availability are awefull right now (If it would only stop raining...) and SSDs really are still too expensive.

But like all things this will change. Until then .....
