Hi,

So, I have an Alcatel Speed Touch Home and a Linksys WRT54GC ver2.0 and a 6MB freedom (i.e. no download or upload limit) connection. Now I am not seeing the full potential of the internet + when I would be on my laptop, the connection (wireless through Linksys) is weak and sometimes it just looses connection.

Now I would like to know why this is happening, maybe I have some odd configurations!!! Also, would like to know whether I would be better if I buy the Belkin F5D8232UK4 N1 Vision 300Mbps Wireless Cable Router??

Hope someone could help me sort this thing out.

P.S.: => I am on ADSL not CABLE

=> So I think this would be [Belkin F5D8631UK4A 300Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router] not the one mentioned earlier.

ADSL connection speed is dependant on your loaction from the exchange and what end of the loop you are on. Unless you are on the first half of the loop you will never get the full potential! and depending how many on that same loop it could be even the first quater of the loop. There are websites that will show you how far away from the exchange you are, else you can contact your provider and they should be able to tell you.

With regards to the wifi a couple of things you can try.

First thing is to make sure that the signal is fine in a direct line of sight so go in to the same room as the access point and check to make sure your signal is good. If that is the case then it is more than likely the location of the router. Try moving it to a different location and then seeing if this improves the signal. Else try changing the channel it might be another signal is interfering.

With regards to using a different router if you have tried everything else and the signal is poor then it might be worthwhile.

Now I just tried the laptop with the wire and the connection was good. Then I saw that the signal was 1/2 full and the thing that really got me was that the Linksys (wireless router) was exactly 2cm away. Thus I am thinking that the router does not have enough power, let alone being able to connect 2 PC's wireless through it!!!!

So, would you recemmend me buying an all in one router as the once mentioned above??

Have you tried changing the channel?

EDIT: check your laptop aswell it might have some power saving options and signal strength options.

I do not know how to change the channel :(

With regards to the laptop, I set the High Performance and the wifi connection should be the strongest possible. So I think that the prob is not the laptop.

Within the router administration usually under settings you will find "Channel" most cases it has the option to select 1 through to 11. It is worth working your way through the channels to see if that improves any.

But where exaclty do I have to go to enter the router administration?

Sry about those questions, but I am not that technical aobut modems & routers :(

On most things u simply open up ur favorite browser and enter 192.168.1.1, does usually need a password, which is often `admin` with no login name.

Linksys is most likely 192.168.1.1 as said above but you will more than likely need to use an ethernet wire connected to port 1 of the switch to be able to access it.

To confirm you can check your default gateway once you are assigned an ip this will be the ip you put in your web browser to access the administration panel.

Start > Run > type cmd enter

ipconfig enter

look for the IP next to default gateway.

Ok, so I managed and found the channel thing. Now I do not which is the best option. It is set on 6 if that might help you.
