I really want 4 bay direct attach storage or nas, but my question is can I mix and match hard drives?

I was thinking 2 fast drives for games and 2 green drives for photos, movies ect ect I dint want them in raid but instead each one as a individual drive.

I was looking at the silverstone 4 bay.

Is there any others I should look at, don't need any thing fancy. and cheaper say £150 mark max

If I remember correctly, it is perfectly fine to mix and match the drives, assuming you will be using them as standalne drive, it is only when you are combining them that they need to be or at least should be identical in terms of specifications.

Best to wait for someone more knowledgeable in this regard to chime in though.

I personally use this one for my work related files and some other stuff: http://www.centrecom.com.au/4-bay-d-link-share-center-cloud-network-storage-enclosure

Though it is about $350, not sure how much it is in the UK, its quite reliable though.

If you're running them in JBOD (as stand alone drives, not in a RAID) then yes, you can use whatever drives you like.

The only time you can use mis-matched drives in a RAID is with software. Something like FlexRAID, unRAID, or (I think) ZFS.
