Mini Project: Nick's "Ghetto" Laptop, turned Modern

So heres the story. I get a laptop to work on from one of my dads co-workers, and naturally I end up liking it. So, I decided to search Hard Forum's FS section for "old laptops," not expecting to find much. I came across two. One PIII laptop for $225 (maybe a bit steep, eh?) and a PII laptop for $75! I immediately PM'ed the guy with the PII laptop and offered my 80GB External HDD for a trade, and he said yes! So we cross ship, and heres what I got atm.

Gateway Solo 5150

  • Pentium II 333MHz "Dixon" w/256K L2 Cache
  • 64MB Micron PC-66
  • 5GB Toshiba HDD
  • CD-ROM
  • 14" @ 1024x768
  • XP Home SP-1 (No Internet, No Updates..)
It runs XP Home pretty well, but then again anything can when the only thing that is installed is Mozilla Firefox, which isn't even used.

Battery holds a charge, LCD is fairly bright with no dead pixels, etc. So yeah, I'm happy.. for now.

Time to modernize the beast :D. The nice thing about this laptop is it has a crap load of features, especially for its age. This will make it easy to upgrade. A few worthwhile features to mention is that it has an integrated IR reciever/sender on the side, which is very cool. I havn't tried it out yet but both my PSP & my Cell Phone have IR receiver/senders too, so maybe I can use it to transfer files with them easily. Another nice feature is that it has two PCIMCIA ports. The only thing it really lacks is onboard LAN, which you'd think it'd have with all of those features right? Nope..

For the upgrade, I plan to get the usual stuff for laptops, being RAM & a Wireless card.I might pick up a small tote case/protector too. Those two sticks of RAM, along with the (on-board ) 32MB SDRAM will give me the maximum 288MB of ram. That is more than enough for AIM, MSN, occasional web browsing, and typing reports for school. XP is actually fairly responsive with 64MB, using one program at a time. The Power LED on the Laptop changes color with CPU load. 0-49% is orange/amber, and 50-100% is green. When loading applications, it's usually amber. That can only mean one thing, the CPU is quite ample. :)

Vintage laptops are very fun. FragTek can back me up on this, he has fun with his older powerbook. If you are on a tight budget, look for one of these older laptops. For under $100, they're great. Dump $30-$100 into them and you have a very powerful laptop for basic things such as Internet, E-Mail, and typing Documents.. which is the primary use of laptops anyway.

I hope this inspires you all to do something similar. It's kind of fun for a little side project. Once I'm all done, I'll post a few more pix.

Thanks for looking!

Very cool project... My property manager just picked up a nice little P3 lappy from work for $100 and I put XP on it for him, runs like a champ! It's an old Dell Latitude, has one of the loudest hard drives I've ever heard lol. Runs good though. He even got the Dell docking station with it which was nice, and I just so happened to have an old 802.11b PC card laying around so I just gave that to him and now he can surf the net from his apartment and pimp the MySpace chicks :)

Out of intrest can you upgrade CPUs on laptops the same as you can on desktops?

and errrrrrrr myspace

Laptops are great, and what u`ve got for the basics of email/web/msny type stuff is ideal and as u say dumping only a little cash into them can make em that much sweeter.

I wonder if u`ll let me know how well u`r wireless card works. Only coz I`ve tried a Linksys B type pci in a PII Acerpower desktop pc and it acted as if it just didn`t want to know. It`d install ok, connect for a short while then drop - drop - drop - most annoying. (the card works just fine and is in some1`s k7 atm)

I'll tell ya :)

@ Ham, yep. You can upgrade CPU's, but good luck finding a mobile PII on eBay lmao.

I'm going to try to restore it almost like new. I've already taken the crappy Pentium II & Windows 98 badges off, to replace them with something nicer. The lid lacked the gateway logo too, we'll see what I can do about that. I'll be ordering stuff today, my Zen sold last night. Stay tuned for updates ! :)

Oh, @ Frag, this HDD isn't very loud heh. I wouldn't expect a measily 5GB to be that loud anyway.

I might get a larger one, for cheap.. maybe 10-20GB, don't need that much.

I used to have a Netgear WG511U 11a/b/g PC card for my Inspiron 1150 (just sold both recently) and it worked very well, for both school and home networks. Also I have a WG111, which is a USB 11g device. I had a bit of trouble with cross-brand compatibility; the 111 didn't like to connect to my D-Link DI-524 router, and it took quite a while messing with it until it finally worked. It connected to my other router, a Netgear, without trouble though.

In terms of both features and reception strength, Centrino (in new laptop) > WG511 > WG111. The Centrino can get Very Good signal on the opposite side of the house from the router, while the 511 got Low, and the 111 got Very Low.

Centrino does rape. Best wireless there is imo. My Dad's Inspiron B130 is CRAZY with reception.

The PSP has a damn nice wireless system too.

Restoration is a go!! Wireless adapter, RAM, Gateway Case Badge for Lid, and Windows XP badge ordered!!! Just need to get a PII one now.
