Looks awesome. Grats on your project, you really made something different than usual.

Regards,
Slice

Thanks Slice! Means alot to me!

Also, This is my first build log, so I dont have much experience sharing everything, I would really appreciate some constructive criticism from people, What could I do better, what else do you want to see, how do you want me to structure things so its a more pleasant reading experience!

Cheers

Looking really good. :) that gpu really is snug.
and 450W is enough to run the 780, and the CPU.
if you want i can do some folding and see exactly how much my 780 and i7 pull when at full load.
How much ram are you going to use.
and i really like this idea, perfect for something i was asked to build, but more as a desktop pc style but with a bit of kick.
The only thing id suggest is that metal piece you are fabricating id coat it in a non conductive paint or even vinyls to prevent shorting.

Hey Remember, thanks for the encouragement! THere is 8gb of ripjaws X 1600mhz in there. I plan to lengthen the case so its not that snug anymore, maybe about 25mm more.
If you can do that, that would be awesome to know full load numbers! I will only have minimal peripherals so I dont need much but the reason they recommend such higher watts is capacitor aging, meaning as the caps get older they get worse and the rated wattage of the psu drops, I want this to be a long term box that is really reliable! no psu's killing a 780!

I have some matte black paint that im going to do the entire case with, inside and out and the internal gpu bracket. Save for the perforated steel that will go on the sides, I want to do away with the ugly side vents!

I am using the AX860i so the results are from corsair link the CPU temps read the same as other software unlike before so use these as an estimate till i go into work tomorrow and ill get a plug in wattage reader.
i have literally screen dumped them and saved them so sorry about the wide pics
just idle

i added this to show you it was on full load

The pic you wanted

Hope this helps but this is also a platinum efficiency PSU so if you are getting a bronze you might need to add around 30W.
and yes i know its an odd resolution i have a 1920x1080 monitor and my old TV/monitor thats 1920x1200.

Woah that was quick! thanks for those numbers! I plan on getting a 3/4770s for the low idle power and lower TDP than both the stock #770 and the #770k. 65w TDP is just so appealing!

So far so good, those numbers are making me swing towards option 2, the silverstone SFX! but if anyone does have any old atx sized power supplies I can tear apart and have a look inside? haha :p

Thanks again for your help! it was hard finding total system power consumtion, most sites did cpu or gpu alone!

Cheers

yeah i know your pain, i work in a shop and we sell a few PSU's i tend to advise people to go towards 500w PSU's for the economy for what they have along with the fact its cheaper for them and also why get more than you need most people are running simple kits anyway just 500W is the lowest i have by a decent brand lol
and i only have an 860 as it was on offer, and i hopefully when monies not to tight be getting a second 780, along with a custom water cooling kit.
But for ease of use id go for the 450W as its good power wise, and to top it off if anything does start to have issues its easy to swap out and replace.
And thats ok im not doing much today anyways :) so i always have a look on here and see if i can help.
Would be nice if maybe someone could do wall tests for common equipment under load and idle and stuffs.

You're awesome! do you sell silverstone strider st55f-g? the 550w gold?

-------- Small Update ----------

Got a package today!

Wonder what this is?

The backplate! this thing is beautiful! ignore those streaks, the rubbed right off after I noticed them!

Installation was a breeze but make sure you have a torx screwdriver kit, something like this:

AAAAND DONE

feels good to complete something!
Sorry no pics of it in the case, its all apart for some cutting and some more cutting then maybe a little measuring thrown in for good measure! Next update should be a big one!

Again sorry for the crap camera phone pictures, that should change sometime next week!

Thanks for your support thus far guys! and your help!

Cheers

Unfortunately no, lol the only decent PSU's i recommend to all my customers are the corsair builder PSU's. All the rest ive used but would not trust.

And loving that back plate i want one for my 780 but they are a lil expensive for me atm, if i got a 770 i could of had one for free lol ...

And that smudge was probs just Isopropyl alcohol or something to clean it.

Unfortunately those atx psu's are hard to mod since they aren't really modular, hate non modular psu's!

Looking good! :)

Thanks Feronix!

----------- Small update ------------

So I decided to just bite the bullet and buy the following items:
1. Silverstone ST45SF-G power supply, Gold rated 450 watt psu, arguably built for this build! not as much amperage as I would like but not many other options out there!

2. Noctua NH_L9i Low profile cpu cooler, better than the stock HS and much easier to build a shroud for!

3. Noiseblocker NB-Blacksilent Fan 60mm, since the case is only 65mm tall kind of limits my fan options, the pansy stock 50mm fans will have to go.

4. Modsmart Vandal LED switch for the front of the case, havent decided on a reset button yet I dont find myself using it very often at all.

As for the rest of things, modding is coming along nicely, building up another big album to dump on you guys! But I am going to be really busy over the next week or so with university so the build might have to take a backseat until next weekend or the week after! Sorry!

And as always thanks for reading!

Thats fair enough,. as i said the SS PSU was the better one for the job you have in hand.
hope you can ventilate the case well.
thats the only issue i have with the little cases

The case is surprisingly well ventilated, I plan to put a fan grill in the top panel and make a 120mm to 92mm adapter with a dust filter, lots of scratch building but it should be fun! the psu will get its own compartment as usual and the gpu will be fed with fresh air from the front nb blacksilent fan.

I think you will enjoy what I have in mind ;)

Awesome, do you have the external dimensions for that case?
im tempted to do a simular thing.
but more as an artistic thing.
And i really cant wait

Off the top of my head, dimenstions are 273mm front to rear, 300mm wide, 65mm tall... you can look for the case on www.logicsupply.com, under expandable cases the g-alantic 620ibk Itx case.

I want to do a really good cosmetic build, but this build must be two stages, the prototyping, getting everything inside and documenting it, solving all the issues with cables, storage, airflow and how to get a damn power plug in the back... might have to break out the old soldering iron I have lying around somewhere...

The second stage will involve brand new brackets being cut and painted once I know the perfect dimensions, everything being painted, matte black is my choice at the moment but I am open to suggestions...

If you do plan to do this.... be prepared to cut straight away, I cut into the case within the first 10 minutes of getting it just to get the gpu in.

im not afraid of cutting anything the only thing im thinking of is adding a flap in a sense thats thermally opened with a little servo, or something ... :)
And always good to throw ideas back and forward.
The amount of messing i will be doing i might as well fabricate the case from scratch buying an mitx case cheap to use the mounting plate for the MoBo

hmm I actually considered that idea for a disk drive, got an old ps2 lying around! so you think something like the alienware auora vents? there isnt much room in this case to begin with, that would be a struggle!

I have some perforated steel mesh lying around, what I plan to do is cut out the side vents and leave a border of around 5mm, then epoxy the perfed steel from behind so its clean and flush, with a large surface area for intake and outtake air on either side of the case... I will get on google sketchup and try explain that on the weekend.

I like that idea though... it might work on the sides? 5-10 small panels with levers on each all connected by a rod and a servo at one end that pushes the rod with a rotating wheel to lever the flaps to the open position.... DUMP ALL THE HEAT *pushes red button* whirrrrr whooosh

Ha yeah thats kinda the idea, the panels will be a little raised allowing some heat to escape but ones the temps say hit 50'C inside the case then boom flaps open, fans go from quiet to max then leds light up, lol im sad lol and i was thinking treat it more like a lift with a cable balanced with a weight so a low power motor can move them.
might nick the system from my blu ray player lol that uses a spring load in the same way. oooh lol i wanna play!!! but no monies yet lol

Well you should be proud.... I am seriously investigating this idea, I really wanted something unique to add to this small form factor build aside from the fact that its quite possibly the smallest... now you have given me the perfect IDEA!!! still have no idea how feasible this is yet...

EDIT:

------ Idea update/poll ------

What does the forums think of this?

Before:
THTAwuA.png

After:
eNQxi2A.png

Closeup:
O990wci.png

Basically like some gimmicky case builders are wont to do....servo actuated vents for airflow, when the computer is off, they would be closed to keep dust etc out. When the computer is turned on, the vents open to allow exhaust air to escape the top of the case.

What does the forum think? pros? cons? yay? nay?

cheers
